Couple of questions/answers

Is it not right that the original supplier of the 2009 inserts has stopped supplying that particular product.

If so does it make it ok for the company trusted to supply approx 2000 sets of tyres to change a component without informing the customer or brca

Comunication

If schumacer had of contacted the brca and all of the racers and said these components arent the same then that would have been fine because we would know but they didnt and indoing so tried the con the consumer. When were schumacer if ever going to tell the masses if ever.

Finally if the they are different for all why is Chris Grainger trying out as has been for a few weeks the new insert

Matt i have set up a group on facebook and iam inviting you to join and be a administrator it would be good to have someone on there with some knowledge of the product.

Finall Finally arent these the preglued tyres for the euros if so when do they intent to tell the organizers (first round of finals)lol

The racing was good - by not having such a complex layout consistency became more crucial tonight I think. A slight mistake was the difference between finals, for example, going into round 3 qualifying Dean Johnson had just out qualified me by about 0.4 secs over a 5 minute run!

Luckily I was able to to get my head down and put in a good time for Q3, and that left 0.06 seconds between myself and Andy over that 5 minute run! Clipping corners was a definite no-no with racing conditions that close.

I placed myself third in the A final, but failed to improve on that, finishing where I started. All in all, a good evening and my last club night before the Mendip National. Tomorrow the rebuilding and shell cutting starts proper! I'll keep it all updated on here, don't worry!

Yesterday, Andy Murray, Adam Whittam and myself trekked off to Halifax for a day of testing and practice before the Mendip National this weekend. We were blessed with much better weather than our last trip, and were greeted with quite a few people taking advantage of that weather to have some fun at the track.

This worked well, as grip levels were pretty good so we were able to work out if anything we tried on the setups was actually of significance for a big race meeting such as the nationals.

We were joined by Jonny Aird (and dad), Chris Bosomworth (and dad) and Michael Ball as well. Pretty much our usual crowd for the TC nationals so that meant things were always entertaining off the track as well as on! Although, to be honest, that was Buzz's (Chris B.) doing more than anything or anyone else... :)

Testing for me ended up being more about getting used to driving outdoors again and then just generally practicing it. My car setup seemed pretty solid and if it handles like that at Mendip I'll be happy as it feels better than on old car did outdoors last year already.

I'm sure as I re-acquaint myself with outdoors again I'll sort out a good base setup, and I'll probably post it on here when I do. Everyone had a good day actually, times with a stopwatch seemed good so we should all be on pace to do as well as last year at the very least, but hopefully much better!

All that remains is for me to finish cutting out bodyshells, rebuild the Tamiya and pack my bags. Fingers crossed I can fit that all into this week. I'm hoping to do a complete rebuild on the wet car too, so far it's just had the electronics installed and the diff rebuilt in preparation but I think it deserves a bit more TLC than that... time permitting I guess.

Anyway, I intend to keep the blog updated throughout the preparation process so keep checking in for pictures and the odd bit of text. I'm also hoping to do some semi-live commentary and results posts from the TC Nationals this year (much like I did with the 12th Nationals) so keep 'yer eyes peeled for that over the coming weekend.

Last Friday I was at the Ribble RC Raceway, a new permanent venue which the Ribble Valley RC club had moved into a few months prior. It was a great venue, with a permanent track and pits and mains throughout. We even had a little race control booth.

Unfortunately, discussions with the landlord regarding rent have not gone well. So, the club now has to move out as it simply cannot sustainably afford the rent being asked for the venue. This is a great shame as it promised to be a great venue in the coming months and years. Nonetheless, I have faith in the committee and the members that we shall rise out of the flames soon. Until then, we have secured a temporary venue a short distance away so I look forward to racing there soon.

After all this had been explained and debated on the Friday night we had some informal racing to fill the remainder of the time. It was good fun, I was putting in some reasonable times and my consistency showed a marked improvement on previous weeks. Fewer mistakes were made and as a result I qualified second place behind Andy at the end of the 2 qualifying round.

The final went much as qualifying did if memory serves. I can't remember much of it unfortunately haha! It seems like a lifetime ago already! I should have written this post sooner... Anyway, focus now turns to the outdoor season as National time is basically upon us, so we were at Halifax testing yesterday...

Adzy and myself were left building the track tonight. We went for something a little bit special. A little unconventional. A little bit 'out there'. A little bit broken if I'm honest... It was named, 'SAWTOOTH'

The name originates from the razor sharp corners we put down the left hand side (obviously!) With all the apexes on the tape line and half your wheels running on a really old strip of carpet; the other half running on normal carpet, it was certainly the highlight of the track layout.

Anyway, after we'd finished admiring our handiwork, racing got under way with MC Colin at the decks, or race control as some might call it.

Racing was a fairly relaxed affair, seeing as it was a Bank Holiday an' all. I struggled being smooth through the sawtooth section all night to be honest and never really put in any fast laps like those of Mr Murray and Mr Carter. Colin looked to be going well with his Yokomo all night; showing me up in the final first with his smoothness through the sawtooth sections, and then with a well deserved 2nd place finish.

I'm still struggling to be smooth with the Tamiya, the setup I had when I first built the car had a wider front end (amongst other things) and I think I preferred the more aggressive driving style this allowed. However, I've since gone back to more of a kit setup, which I've struggled with. However, I'm persevering as I think it's a quicker setup if I could just drive it properly!

Hoping to find time in the coming week to have a go over both the Tamiya and the wet car in preparation for the rapidly approaching Mendip National. When I do, I'll be sure to keep here up to date with some rebuild pictures, particularly of the wet car as that hasn't really featured on here yet. Until then, see you at the track.

Last night I was at Ribble Valley RC Car Club for my usual Friday racing session. University dissertation commitments meant that my car remained untouched from the outdoor session at Halifax the previous day. The car went surprisingly well, although to be honest the changes between my current and 'under-construction' base indoor and outdoor setups seem fairly minor. The car even felt better in some places with the outdoor setup, which makes a little sense given the fact I'm now using my old 'outdoor' Sorex 32s indoors now. Guess they require a different setup to the Sorex 28s.

Anyhoo, qualifying passed with relatively little commotion apart from me struggling with the SpeedPassion's speed at first. I was definitely overgeared, but didn't have any bigger spurs or smaller pinions to put on. So had to settle for the car going a little soft at the end of the run and motor temperatures in the high 70s (degrees C of course). I've just ordered a bigger spur, so hopefully won't have this issue for much longer.

The final went okay, but I'm still making too many mistakes compared to how I used to drive. Note to self: taking a month off racing kills your 'skill level' Thomas. I just need to practice, practice, practice now before the Mendip National on the 15th May.

Yesterday saw Andy and I visit Halifax for our first outdoor testing session of the summer season. We were both up until 3:30 in the morning the night before our test day in an attempt to get our cars ready. It didn't really work. We ended up having to finish making final changes to setup, gearing, etc. when we arrived at the track the following morning anyway (later that morning?)

I spent most of my night wiring up and dremeling my new SpeedPassion motor heatsink/Much-More fans combo. The end result was satisfying though; a perfect fit and a stone-cold motor. Well, at least that's what I'm aiming for with this cooling 'beast'!

The final thing I did before going to sleep was updating my SpeedPassion ESC firmware with the new beta stock specific firmware update. (Although I believe the firmware is now out of the beta stages and has now been released on the HobbyWing website and will be released on the SpeedPassion site very soon). After some Windows 7 'run as Administrator' issues I finally got the software working properly on my laptop and updated the speedo. I then loaded up settings from Stefan (who had kindly explained all the installation and setup intricacies to me beforehand). A quick blip of the throttle whilst it was still on the bench sounded VERY promising indeed. I went to sleep excited for the next day; I had heard about the firmware update were true.

After oversleeping ever so slightly, we made it to Halifax to be greeted by warm dry weather with glimpses of sunshine to boot. So, after the setup of our testing pit areas we ventured out on the asphalt for the first time since the Mendip national last year.

Andy's car looked good, both round the corners and down the straight. I was concerned that even with my new SpeedPassion firmware, I wasn't going to be a match for the infamous new GM speed control's power. We took it in turns driving and marshaling, with the marshal's main role being motor temping. As Halifax is the biggest track on the calendar, keeping motor temps down (especially with all the power the new speed controls are squeezing out of 10.5 motors) is usually the biggest issue.

I went out next and WOW! just, WOW! I was not to be disappointed by the new turn of speed the SpeedPassion had developed overnight. My car was like a missile going down the straight. It's always hard to judge speed with no one else on the track (and unfortunately Andy and I never got out together) but even Andy commented on how fast mine looked going down the straight. I was amazed. I remember the straight at Halifax seeming to take a while in 10.5 last year, this time I kept overshooting the apex at the end of the straight as I was arriving there before I was expecting to! Happy days.

My setup needed some work to get round the corners a bit quicker though, and while I was off the track making my second set of adjustments the heavens decided they had been too kind to us already and opened wide. Neither of us had fully prepared wet cars, so that signalled the end of our fun. Although, Andy had installed his new '2010' wet tub, so that got a bit of a trial in the inclement weather before we packed up and headed home.

On the whole, the test was useful. We both now feel confident that our cars have the straight line speed to compete this season (I even had to gear down as it didn't sound like it had finished accelerating!) But, some work remains to be done on our setups still; the cars weren't terrible but I wouldn't call them good either - it was just a shame we ran out of weather before we could work on them any further. Never fear though, there is still time for all that and more testing will be happening in the next few weeks before the first Mendip National.

At the usual Monday night club meet last night I went fairly well on the whole I think. I was trying the car on Sorex 32s last night because my Sorex 28s have worn out and I'm currently feeling something of a financial strain so I've resorted to using up some of the seemingly hundreds of tires I have lying around from last year's National series.

The switch to a harder compound caught me out in Round 1 as I struggled to get it round the corners. As I was helping my friend Colin pit, I didn't have much time for any serious setup changes, but I did manage to take my Smoke'em carbon fibre steering rack brace off in time for Round 2 which helped traction on the front a lot. The car felt like it was capable of quick times in Round 2, but a lack of consistency on my part meant that although my best lap time was impressive, my average lap time left something to be desired.

Round 3 and I managed to finally put in a consistently quick time which placed me 3rd on the grid in the A final. Ironically enough my qualifying start position, so at least I'm placing where my average ability in the computer puts me at the start of the meeting... nearly back to where I was before this break then!

Unfortunately I lost all self-control in the final and after making a mistake a few laps in, kept pushing far too hard to make up for it. Inevitably resulting in me simply making more mistakes and dropping further and further back from where I should have been. This has been noted though, and it stops here. Friday night will be a flawless performance - combining skill, elegance and sheer speed. Hopefully.
