OK I know this is probably going to sound pretty stupid to all you experts but...................

What are the advantages in changing spur gears on the Losi. It seems possible to get very nearly the same ratio depending on what pinion you run so where is the advantage. Do you change spurs to suit tracks, does the effect of changing spur gears alter the max power or punch factor at particular points.

good question, my answer is coming more from an off road perspective, well I dont really have an answer.

the only reason I can see is to use the smallest spur you can so you can use a small pinion so that you lower the rotatin mass.

hmm maybe another reason could be motor placement (forward/backwards)

Changing the Spur can allow you to really "fine tune" the gearing - like Chris says smaller gears lower the rotating mass (larger gears have advantages too but we wont go there now)

On the XXX-S the different gearings will move the motor forwards and backwards slightly as well as up and down too.
