I have a yokomo yrx12 which is basically an associated RC12L3 with a few minor changes. One of these changes is the ability to remove the damper plate and mount 3 micro shocks, just like on the 10th scale Pan.
what Id like to know is....is there any point to doing it that way? would the car benefit...or is it exactly the same just heavier....

The calandra/trinity 1/12th cars use 1 shock, with side damper tubes. They don't appear to have any advantage over the associateds (just 1 shock), although this might be different on asphalt.
On the Pro10 cars, they used to use spring/damper units. This resists roll better than a simple T-piece. However, it will be too much for a 1/12th car.
If you mean dampers only, then the 'tube' type are OK. You may need to remove the top plastic plate from your current damper, and both springs, to prevent you having too much damping.
IME, the standard Associated system works fine, and wins races. Get a set-up sheet from the CML site (www.cmldistribution.co.uk) and follow that - it will be an excellent starting point. HTH :)
