View Full Version : spool/one way?

I was looking at getting a one way for my SD, but am not sure whether this is the right thing to do. I tend to go deep into corners, and am therefore usually still braking when I'm starting to turn. At the last meeting I did, I was struggling for initial turn in, due to the fact I was running the ball diff. I tightened it a little during the meeting, and there was a slight improvement. So is a one way the "way to go" (pardon the pun!), should I go for a spool instead, or just tighten the diff right up?

Bear in mind that if I can get away with not spending money then I will, but obviously I want my car to handle to my liking, so I will pay if I have to! :D

Hi Mark,

A spool would give less turn in but more on power steering.
A one-way would give a crap load of turn in and give loads of on power (if it is a 'locked diff' style one way) but on most tracks you wont be able to touch the brakes even in a straight line, it will just swap ends.

If I have all the bits with me on the next monday at HW I will put the different bits in the front of my xxx-s and you can see/drive the differance to help you make up your mind if you have not done all ready, you might even end up switching chassis! ;) :p
hopefully my TC will be ready to race by then :(

We have found a front spool best for most tracks we run on.

It's like a front one way, out of corners, but it has 2 more advantages:

1. You have brakes.

2. It costs less.

The front one way is fine for fast, flowing tracks where you don't need the brakes. Unfortunately if you run 8 turn motors there aren't many of those.

Joe from sunny Malta.

Chris;

Changing chassis is out of the question, unless of course helger want to sponsor me! :D The yoke is a good car, and my initial impressions of it have been very good. I'm reluctant to run it around H/W, as I'll probably break it!

Not sure if I'll be there (again!) on monday, as I'm doing a mardave national in hereford the day before. :(

I don't think I want a spool then, as I'm struggling for turn in already! I may get a one-way, and adjust my driving style to suit! I run very little brakes anyway, as most of my speed is scrubbed off when I turn in.

Hi guys,

I'm also considering the spool / one-way options. Where can you get them and how much is each?

Thanks,

JAmes

hi the one way is £39.99 and is a yokomo part.
the spool diff is shown on www.cmldistribution.co.uk
is a fastrack part and is £29.99 plus you need a gear set which is about £7.

you can also make a spool out of a one way by harolditing (think thats how its spelt) the outdrive into the main body its reliable and has never slipped

hope it helps

So you take a £40 part and turn it into a £22 part?

^ thank you for that enlightenment!
I really think that spools are much easier to drive. I never got used to the strange handling characteristics of one-ways. Somehow, pro drivers manage to use them on carpet, so there must be some sort of technique.
