View Full Version : Evo 3 - How to hold my cells

Finally getting my Surikarn (sp?) near to completion, but just a bit confused as to how I'm supposed to secure my cells to the chassis. The manual says if you're using side-by-side cells (which I am), I should take off the outer plastic bit, and the parts that would normally hold the carbon bar in place. If that's the case, then how am I supposed to hold the cells in?
Am I mixed up somewhere, or do I need to buy some more parts?
Thanks in advance.

I'm running side by side cells in my Surikarn and you need to do two things.
1) Cut down the carbon strap mounts by about 5-6mm where the post screws in. Then you can carry on using the bar to hold the cells in. Also if you are running 3300 cells you need to dremel out the mounts each end to allow for the longer length of the cells.
2) File down the battery slots in the chassis to lower the cells into.
Takes a bit of time but is better than fibreglass tape that Tamiya recommend.

I used the fibreglass tape to hold my 3300's in place without any problem. Then again i did not want to start cutting my mounts about.
The part the manual says not to use if using side by side stick packs is the plastic part that would run along the side of the cells at the edge of the chassis but i would not remove the mounts and carbonfibre retainer if you are using 3000 cells.

I have Dremmeled out the ends aswell, and in lowering the posts, be careful not to take too much off (again the Dremel can assist greatly) and then file to fine tune. I know, because I made that mistake and had to get spacers and suchlike!
The carbon stay is much better for speed and practicality, although the use of tape saves on weight (although a bit fiddly when you get to the upper echelon that John's in!) LOL ;D
Great chassis though, isn't it?

Ive been useing tape for the past few months and it works awesome i find. Takes some time but no problems once your used to it.
Im useing tape from A*ex models, its a bot too wide for the slots which is a bummer but oh well.
It saves quite alot of weight too.
Out door i prefer useing tape anyday as they dont wobble, saves weight and all that.
Indoor ( as im not very good yet!! ) i think it might be worth sticking to the carbon strap as the more knocks you take the tape tends to loosen i found n its not too nice in your cells....... now is it just that or my driving!?
Im going to get my own lower deck made soon, im going to get rid of all the carbon strap placement and extend the tape slots. Change the cuts of the cell slots to make it easier on the cells, and it will also be pre prepared and cut ready.
Hopefully be my nationals chassis :)

Hi all...
I`m Peter from Hungary. I race my (sweet) evo 3 indoors at my local club in Budapest. I use the original plastic stuff to hold my cells in, but i cut its lower edge to make some space for them.

Oh, there's a local club in budapest ? That's great, next time I'll come I'll bring my stuff !
There are several clubs and tracks(no good quality) in BP. In Hungary only the fanatic fans of RC do this hobby, because its expensive. :'(
You`re always welcome. :)

It's a sad fact that radio control racing is expensive and the numbers rely on the 'disposable' income...
Mine's not so much disposable as throw away! ;D

if u file the bars down so the saddle battery packs dont fall out can u still fit in stick battery packs ???

Yes! The stick packs will still fit... We only file down a small amount of material on the edges of the cell holes to allow the side by side cells to fit lower and more snugly... No big deal. ;D
Fibre tape available from st@ples the stationery shop, 18mm wide works fine on my TRF415 £1.48 a roll.
Anyone made a strap for TRF415 yet ?
