View Full Version : Fantom 'KRY'
I am once again on the look out for a 12t motor. What is the Fantom KRY like? Better than Reedy Kr? Compareable to the D5 Flatliner??
Cheers guy's,

I personally don't rate the D5 so for me that's striaght out of the wondow 8)
The KRY and Reedy Kr are ultimately based on exactly the same oem components so there won't be much in it. However for me the Fantoms are a little better wound and better balenced. The Reedy that i have is drill balenced where are both Fantoms that i have are epoxied.
Ok thaks matt.
Im assuming you run it in yor mission, so what's a good gearing starting point??
cheers

Yes i have been running them in a mission. What sort of track are you racing on??
well it changes each week (outdoor), but there is generally two medium length straights, and a medium to slow infield. I think acelleration needs priority over top speed.

I have generally been running 25-86 on bigger high ish grip outdoor tracks. I used one yesterday on a small ish indoor track on 21-86. So i would guess you want to be somewhere 22/23.
What motor/gearing are you running currently??
it was a orion core 12x2, used 24/86 and sometimes 23/86.
also what brusehs are you using, do you use the fantom actron kry brushes?

Then i would say start with a 22 and work from there.
Generally yes i have been using the Fantom Actron brushes. I have also been using the Fantom Stock brushes, awesome power but obviousely a little harder on the comm.
I am also going to try some Orion 10/30's at some point as i think they might be a little better for club racing.
Ok, thanks for all the info matt.
cheers
Sorry, one more thing, that was with the 20t layshaft pulley wasnt it?
thanks

What we make a 17t pulley Matt ;)
Now (sensible!) outdoor racing is over, I'm off indoors with a 12-turn KRY. Having lots of laydown brushes left over from a 27 & 19 turn season I should have a chance to try some out over the coming weeks.
Actrons sound a good starting point - the Quasars were always good in the Fanton "Ti" canned motors.

Actrons are the standard brush in Reedy Kryptons, so they should work well! :D

Now I don't know what brushes the KY comes with - the look a bit like Actrons, and as the Fantom site didn't list these motors last time I checked we cannot be certain.
One night in and as per the tuning advice the KRY liked being geared down a bit. Tried the kit brushes and springs - fast! - and then Reedy 767s and red +ve/green -ve springs - smoother. Those that know my stock tuning preferences will recognised the spring tuning advice.
Limited running prevented any more testing, and it will be a couple of weeks before any more. The "hot tip" on rccars.com seems to be 767s, so stay tuned...

Mark
Yes they are actrons that come in them from new. Be careful going that soft on the springing. For some reason the KR/KRY seem to need really stiff springing. Either Red/Red, or even Purple/Purple :o ??? ::) I haven't tried different springs on pos/neg.
I have been using 767's outdoors and they have serious power, but haven't done any running indoors with them at all.

Hi Matt,
Hope you're feeling better...
Old stock tuning habits die hard, so thanks for the tip. I'll stick to red/red next weekend, and see if its any quicker.
Now purple/purple is serious stiff, and to my knowledge there is only one harder grade of brush spring. I'm thinking red/purple next - it would break the habits to run the same colour both sides...
Now I tried 767s in both 19-turn and stock and didn't get on with them - they felt ok in the KRY, and look ok after a couple of runs.
Cheers

It's funny, the brushes don't seem to burn up that much. I thought they would. Didn't like the idea of the springs, but there you go!!!
Not sure if'll get that much chance to run the KRY's indoors now, i shall need them again come april ::)
Yup, feel ok now cheers........
