I don't think you'll get much better than the FT ones.

If you want to improve them you could put a set of Yoke SD caps with bladders on them, but I can't think of anything else that will be better.

oh yes tamiya trf's have got to be about 10 times better. I must say the ft tc3 shocks are very poor. Fairly difficult to fill, not smooth and they leak.

Sounds like you are doing something wrong, they do not leak and they are not too hard to fill either.

I've been using mine for 18 months. Not had a problem before, untill recently. They've been rebuilt twice (new O rings and unobtanium shafts) I change the oil either when track conditions demand, or every two or three meetings (I only race on one indoor track) Its only one that leaks, and I cant see anything wrong with it. I find them easy to maintain, but not at all smooth in their action. There always feels like a "sticky" point, as if somethings is moving, or tightening before the shock works. I now understand there to be two designs of internals, perhaps these problems are only associated with one design, which appears to be a later addition. Oh, and the "infamous" AE squeek gets on my nerves

They do leak when using outdoors in cold conditions as many people have expirienced.
Also you have obviously never filled any trf's. Even when the Ae 1's are filled correctly they are not smooth and air always gets into them.
Look at many of the new cars coming out. The hpi pro 4 shocks are almost an exact copy of the trfs . I wonder why.

There has to be air in the Associated shocks otherwise they will not work since they do not work with a bladder.

I have raced in < -10 degr. Celcius and I have yet to see a shock leak.

We think what has been happening is debree from the grass has been getting on the shafts forcing the o rings upwards thus makeing the shoks leak. As the air in the Ae shocks makes the upwards and downward motion very inconsistant. This is the main improvement of the trf's.

and do the TRF ones fit perfectly?? Any mods needed?

nope no mods at all, the only differenct is that youll now be using ball studs at the bottom of the shocks instead of the AE screw/ball assembly, but these are included in the TRF shock set. you may need to have the ballends of the shocks screwed out (on the shaft) abit tho to achive more droop. good vale too :) ;)

I've seen smoe but can't tell, are they threaded?

Stew Noble

they sure are, nice drilled ally lower spring retainers too ;D

I think the main reason they dont leak is the bottom bit it better designed. There is no way the o ring can be pushed upwards.

very similar to the HPI RS4-Rally shocks, just threaded and not moulded

Hi frienfs. Greetings from Malta.

OK so the stock AE shocks are plain and boring. I still think they do an excellent job, however I do admit you can get better.

But you can also improve the stock AE shocks. 2 ways. Firstly you can put a bleed screw in the cap, a-la-Yoke. Secondly you can replace the plastic caps with the Yoke SD bladder type caps.

I find most shocks bind when new but as soon as they have had some use they soon smooth out.

Of course if you really want some smooth, smart shocks try Corally Assassin shocks. A straight fit. I have had a set on my SD for 6 months now and have not had any bother with them.

Are the yoke caps a staight fit or are the threads different?

How easy are they to fill, and how often will this need to be done?

They are ridiculously easy to fill. They dont need filling often just wen you want to change wt.
