View Full Version : Shinwa Motor Dresser

I have recently purchased a used Shinwa Motor Dresser and have a question.

When I put either my KR 12x2 or PT 10x2 on it seems to cause the dresser to malfunction, the motor will run fine for say 20 seconds then cut out, and then just give sporadic little spurts of life for the whole time the motor is connected.

But, when I connect an older motor or stock, it is fine.

Any ideas? Could it be some dodgy fets, or just that the newer motors draw too much power from the dresser?

It sounds like the motors are pulling too much power to me. Try turing the timing down and see if it runs ok then. If they do then it is too much current.

problem is the shinwa is an old design now and cant cope with the high amps that the newer motors draw (it has a 5 amp cutout)
try speeding the motor up slowly using the slider so you dont get the initial surge
may help

unfortunately, in order to pull some correct readings from the motors, the slider has to be moved quite far, also the current reading if way into the red when the slider has only just been touched.

i guess the dresser just isnt up to it anymore.

can anyone pm me with some newer dyno's/dressers and where i can get them from please?

just a thought
you may be able to get it BEEFED up a bit if you know anyone into electronics

The reason the current is so high when you are just starting the motor, is that the motor is stalled, and draws a lot of current to get it moving, once moving, then it should come down.

As for it cutting out, the motor dresser isn't designed to be run for long periods at full tilt, more short burst, but you could try blasting the slider with some wd40 to remove dust and debris in there, other than that, there isn't anything you can simply service.

The only other option would be to change the FET on the heatsink.... but that either works or doesn;t.

Andy, I was thinking this myself, like getting a lower limit ESC for example.

Steve, I have noticed that the current draw lowers as the motor speeds up, but this is only with older motors. The KR and PT just seem to sup the juice as the needle stay's well over to the right.

The reason I wanted it to run for longer periods is to run the motors in. But with the problems I encountered I just settled for a 4 cell stick of 2000 nicads, although I did make good use of the dresser as a motor clamp. ::)

As for changing the FET, any ideas on what to change it to?

Thanks for the advice peeps. Much appreciated. ;)

I have recently got one of these and manage to spin an 11Tx3 Orion up to 50000 rpm but it does draw close to 5A.

Does anyone know where I can get more instructions for this unit?

I think I have a copy, but it is ALL in Japanese I think, so not much good to you realy. Personally, I wouldn't use the shinwa to run a motor in, I have a PSU conversion and use that, much better, more stable too.

There is another option, and that is to get a higher rated ampmeter installed into your shinwa, that may help, but personally, I take no notice of the RPM guage, I use my ear for that.

You got to remember, these things were built when a 13t motor was considered VERY hot, but it should cope with newer motors, you just got to be patient. And the slider is a pain in the butt too.

Can you give me a brief overview of how to use this kit properly. At the moment ive been setting the timing dial to zero and just adjustng timing on the endbell to guage effects on RPM and current drain.

Whats the timing dial used for and how is it used?

I have never bothered with the timing knob, could never work out what it supposed to do, so I just leave it in the same position. What I DO do, is run it off a 12v PSU, and set the slider to a set voltage, and do all my tests and checks like that.
