it is to stop you pulling wheelies and skidding at the start, when you press full down on the throttle from start it will slip abit allowing a more controlled start, the slipper can be adjust, if you tighten the slipper it will slip less allowing a faster but not as controlled start, if you loosen the slipper it will have a slow more controlled start. If i was you i would set it as tight as it can go then put it on the track and press full throttle and see how much control you have and adjust it from there

I depends on what track and how you drive.

The only use I find for them on most tracks is to protect the transmission.

on really bumpy tracks running it a little looser will allow your car to accelerate out of corners a little smoother and wont snatch as much.

running it too loose sometimes you will find it will get looser during the race as heat starts building up.

you can also use it for starts like Joe suggests, I have found that setting it for the start usally makes it too loose for the rest of the 5 minutes, you only go from a stand still once, just make sure you front wheels are on the ground before you want to do some turning!

You good guys might only go from a stand still once but us mere mortals have to do it several times!!!!! but I do agree you dont need to floor it from the start and expect the slipper to cope and still be right for the rest of the race.
