Hi all,
new to modified motors to have never really messed around with the timing. I have just skimmed it and bought some new brushes so it is ready to go back together but, I dont know where I should set the timing. Could some please tell me what adjusting it does and does it depend on what track you are on?

Increasing timing increaces RPM and I think decreases torque. If you set the timing too high then you will increase brush and comm wear because of the higher RPM's.

click on red text for link,
Modified Motor Timing (http://www.macctrack.co.uk/timing.html)
Spot on explanation on that site!
If I were you Kris, I would halve all the suggested advance figures if this is your first adventure in Modified racing. They are right, but they require a very good maintenance regime (rebuilds every meeting really) and some sensitivity with the throttle. Once you get the hang of it, and undertand the rates of wear, and motor characteristics, they are good numbers to aim for. HTH :)

Thanks for that link. Just a quick question- I am using a 12x3 with 2400's von a small(straight is about 25 feet long) tight track. It says I need to use between 15 - 25 deg timing. If the track I am on is small does this mean that I need to do set it 20 deg clockwise from 0 or do I need to turn 20 deg counter-clockwise from 0 ? Hope that makes sense :-
