Hi,

My mate just bought a new Novak SS5800 + speedo system.

On trying it for the first time (out of car) there is a rough, off balance type of noise at about 30% throttle. Then the tone changes at around 60% throttle and then at full revs it runs smooth but sounds slow.

I have the same system and we compared the two, mine definately has a higher top end pitch. He has done the 1 touch setup numerous times (FF3 tranny) but still the problem persists. The green max throttle light comes on when his stick is at full forward throw but when he throttles back a little there is no change, whereas with mine, little changes in stick adjustment can be heard with a differing motor rpm tone.

Any suggestions? We also tried it with my tranny and it did the same.

Hope it's not a case of sending it back to Novak for service??? We are most likely going to setup the 2 cars with a similar ratio and run them together to compare top speeds soon.

Cheers,

Same motors and same controllers, then I would suggest that you switch motors and compare again....but I take no responsibility if there is a problem :-

I would also add that you really should not be running a BL motor unloaded (out of a car) since it can spool up very quickly and the back emf on braking (in this state) may damage the controllers!

Another guy at the club bought the novak system at the same time as my mate I mentioned in my 1st post.

Running on carpet with an overall ratio of around 7.0 (as the instructions recommend) and the thing blew up! Thick white smoke started bellowing out of it and it had well and truely fried itself, so much for thermal shutdown and he wasnt even driving that hard!

Hmm, suggests a faulty batch as both systems from the same shop at the same time are faulty.........unlucky. :-

I had a very similar problem and it turned out to be a bad motor bearing.

Hi,

It was my system that Dan was talking about in the first post. I oiled the bearing at the pinion end of the motor and this helped remove some of the rough noise it was making. I don't know how to get at the other bearing to oil it. Taking out the three small screws doesn't seem to make the plastic cover come off unless I have missed something. Anybody know how to get at it?

Also I have set my tranny to 70% throw each way before I did the one touch set up and this seemed to help.

I ran the system today at the track (Stonehaven) and it seems to be running well. It has loads of torque and good top end. I only got 3 runs in though since it decided to rain!!!

Yes I had the ESC go up in smoke. I was running a ratio of 7.33, it worked fine for 6 laps, then slowed down to a stop and ended up in a white puff of smoke :o

The ESC was so hot, it detached two of the soldered wires and then caught fire! So much for the thermal cut off. I contacted Novak who are going to replace the controller under warranty, as it should not have done that :-
