Ask someone with a lathe at your club to set it up and show you how to use it.
If you are going to the F2's or F3's I will be happy to do it.

the first time i used a skimmer i read an article in an american rc mag and they suggest spinning the armature and then use a marker pen on the com,so as you come to skimm it you can tell when it's beeing skimmed properly as the marker pen reveals copper underneath. the i dea is to only make light skimms across the comm if to much copper starts flicking off then the armature will wear prematurly and when you spend x amount of pounds on a motor you want it to last longer than one skimm so the moral of this story is little and often
hope this helps

Got a guy to show me how to use the comm lathe down at my club yesterday ;D

I then got to skim my own comm on a hudy lathe (borrowed it as dont get mine till today / tomm ) - stuck new brushes on it and POW!! - it didnt half fly - I did a good job of skimming it but felt I maybe took a little bit too much off at first .... ah well always next time ;D

Hi Scott,
Long time no see.

Skimmer, mmmh, good investment. Im sure Roger Wood will give you A+ instructions at Bury Metro.

I recommend after skimming using a biro along the three grooves in the comm to just remove the sharpness slightly, and if the biro is fine enough it'll remove any copper dust which could burn out your armiture.

Will he now *:) - best hassle him this Sunday then *:)

I use a biro anyway to remove the sharp edges and also a knife to remove the depris from the slots....

Im not doing too bad but see my other post for problems come across so far *:)
