What is more powerful a 12 double or a 13 triple the reason i ask is that my speado has a 12 turn limit on it so can it take a 13 triple?

Yes, it should take it, but it being geared properly, and the 12 turn SHOULD be more powerfull as well.

What car is it and what speedo?
Many speedos have a motor limit on them - check the manufacturers specs!

its a tamiya tl01 chassis and without going to look i cant remember the speedo. it has a 12 turn motor limit on it.
I told the guy in the shop this and he said it only applied to 2 wheel drive cars as 4 wheel drive ones draw more current

Unless your TL-01 chassis is ballraced, i would say it will melt a lot more than the speedo. I don't think the TL-01 is designed for a hot mod motor.

I bought a pair of Baja champs (TL01B).
One came with a 19 single on it.... ran it for 10 mins and melted the battery connector and everything was too hot to touch.
It was running speed tuned gears. I've swapped over to the stnd gearing and it still gets very hot.
I've ballraced both of them and still the heat dosnt feel safe. (after 1 min in the kitchen!)
I've put a 540 back on and its ok.
I really dont think the gearing is right on these for 'hot' motors unless you mean litteraly HOT!

I take it you have an ESC

yep... old Koshyo one. from what i can tell is normally shipped with 540's so that may be the problem...
I've just put my new MTronick RV11 on with the 540 and its made the world of difference!
not sure if i want to risk the 19single i dont want to fry this ESC! could ther be something wront with the motor? short in the windings? something like that?

you will need to run the smallest pinion with the 19turn motor. the tl01 chassis has a very low standard gear ratio so will overheat the motor if you dont raise it by putting a smaller pinion on it.

yep... unfortunatly there are only positions for a 19, 21, 23 tooth pinion in the casing...
not sure a smaller pinion would mesh with the spur :(

has anyone seen a motor mounting plate for the TL01's that allows different pinions to be used??

most tamiya cars only have 3 motor mounting holes which only allow the sizes of pinion listed on the previous page to be used.
dont think there is a different motor plate available for tamiya cars. you could try drilling out the solid material between the screw holes on the motor mount and if you can take a bit more off round the edges. this should allow you to use larger pinions.
