Second race with my SSG I broke a front hub clean in half. A guy at the club leant me a replacement and I finally got some spares and gave him one back. He told me the replacements are different from the kit hubs (1 offset or something) so have I missed something?? I don't remember reading anything anywhere about it?
Oh, and it's great that I have to buy fronts and rears together - if they keep breaking at this rate then i'll have a pile of rears left ::)
Hopefully i'll stop touching the hoses and break them less often. ;D

hmmmm, just put them side by side and I can't see any difference at all, except for the '1' on the new one. Nope, look identical to me. ???
Can anyone confirm?

hi you can buy differnt offset steering hubs 1mm or 0.5mm.
that part was the first thing i broke on my sd along with the c hub.
i run standard plastic c hub but team suzuki blue alloy steering hubs.
the best money i ve spent as there better quality and the kingpins dont fall out!
always keeps a set of wishbones in stock also.

If you check carefully there is a difference.
Where the steering arm joins the hub the moulding on the inside edge has a small extra nick set in it whereas the standard unit does not have this. Also if you look at where the top kingpin lug is positioned on the hub the modified unit is in a slightly different position to the standard unit.
I guess you fell into the same trap I did I went to buy a spare and jibbed at the idea of having to buy front and rear hubs together part number SD415. I was told the hubs were available serperately as part SD 415S so bought some, what they didn't say was the hubs are different!!!
The modified hub is supposed to give you more steering as the trail is different, quite what this means and why you would want more steering on a car that already has plenty I'm not sure, but I am certain that someone can enlighten us.

Thanks for the replies, i'm even more confused now ;D

My kit hub (the one I broke) and the replacement are identical at this point.

Top lug? I thought they weren't handed? ???
The offset of the kingpins from the bearing centres is the same too.
I bought the car unbuilt, still in the box/bags, off eBay - could it be a foreign kit (maybe american)? There were no setup sheets with it.
I see now he gave me a "1" so i'll swap my kit hub for my new "1" so they're both the same.

Well I can only tell you this there are two different parts one is sold on its own the other comes with rear hubs as well. With one of each on the desk in front of me what I told you is what I saw.

SD doesn't come with any set up sheets, but plenty about for download on net.
I just buy the hubs in pairs, as threads go in the king pins before I break em. Noticed the '1' & '0', put it down to a slight difference in geometry, and replaced both. I couldn't tell anyway!! (Has anyone else stopped breaking SD's? Just that i went though 5 hubs in 3 weeks, not broken one since (about 3 months without one single DNF), Does anyone know if there was/is a quality issue? Or just coincidence/bad luck?

Ah right. I thought i'd read that you get some setup info when you buy the car in the UK.
cheers.

Captain I was slightly incorrect in my previous post its not the top kingpin mount its both! below is an extract from one of Doom's posts from another thread this explains the difference better that I can
"Standard SD hubs have a 1mm trail, that is to say, the centreline of the axle trails behind the centreline of the steering kingpins by 1mm.
The optional hubs (and the Fastrax ally hubs) have zero trail"

It does come with setup sheets when you buy it in the US. For most of the popular tracks and the kit setup.
