Tomorrow's meeting will see the introduction of six new pieces of pipe as we move towards a complete track of PVC downpipe and away from rubber pipe and towards 1:12 BRCA track legality :D yay !

One or two more packs and we will be rubber pipe free;)

Hi peter, what are you using for the corners, as we are trying to get the downpipe bent in to 45 deg curves.

Hi peter, what are you using for the corners, as we are trying to get the downpipe bent in to 45 deg curves.

we use 6mm x 60mm upvc strip from any good upvc supplier with foam pipe lagging (choose a suitable size of pipe lagging that just fits inside your track markers)

hope this helps

Hi Stuart,

Are you trying or have you found someone that will definitely bend them ? We use Screwfix white PVC downpipe that comes in packs of six , it's 2 metres by 63mm square (I think)

Ideally we would have curved pieces of the same, weve been through a number of homemade bends from various materials

At present we use wooden blocks, screwed and glued , overlapping like bricks in a brick wall then shaped , then we have added a plastic 'bumper' with some spring in it to give a smooth finish and to blend better to the PVC pipe. The bumper bit is from a Shell plastic oil drum , and each bend takes hours to make. I have a patient father that makes them and we've been through maybe 5 different designs over the last six years :o

Peter

Remind me to bring a CARS shoot out corner marking to the next meeting for you to look at, they are a combination of downpipe and 6mm UPVC, each end then has some wood (to fit inside downpipe) fixed to each end. then velcro is attached to the bottom to allow them to be secured to the carpet. If i get chance will take a photo and put up here.

Just found this, possibly not the best photo but gives an idea of what they use.

Do hope Kev and the CARS crew don't mind the link ;)

hi peter,

we have the same downpipe, I have had a couple of trials, and at the moments I am making a wooden form, then heat sections of downpipe in an old bbq once it goes flexible then slide over the wooden form.
The first couple of goes worked ok. so now making a proper form as the last one broke.

Will post photos in a few weeks when I get time to finish the form.

Sounds good, would love to see pics , trial and error but something we've not tried so much as we werent sure how strong it would be after being formed. The other thing we tried was cutting out bits to form a bend (cutting triangles out )

Peter, cutting groves and bending was the first thing I tried, but the glue was too brittle, ideal if it could be plastic welded.
But it did look good for almost a day.

Charles's suggestion looks good and I'm sure I've seen something similar in use already at the club which seems to work really well... However, I would love to see the downpipe being formed over the glowing embers of a BBQ!!! :D
