Does anyone know why there are mainly single and double winds available now. Is there a reason why people are using more 'punchy' motors than the smoother higher winds?

Well i'm not sure but I think you hit the nail on the head when you say more punchy winds. I think the whole reason is for that extra punch on small tracks.

seeming as we're not really in the cars ourselves it doesn't really matter how smooth it is(or mabye i'm missing your point)
and i'd rather see my car nail it out of a corner than watch it smoothly accelerate! ;D

Well. when i raced a few years ago shops were selling mainly x2 and x3 up to x6. I just don't understand why people have stopped using them. Is it because the batteries give more run time and can handle more abuse?

It could be that nowadays speed controller technology has advanced so much, that people can decide how much punch they want. They buy a low wind motor, and adjust the punch to their preffered setting. As you say, the batteries are also better, so can handle the abuse a bit better!
I think it has more to do with the inability of machines to wind 4,5 and 6 wires at a time. Since the motors have become much more efficient, there is no need to hand-wind them either. If the machines can't crank out cost-effective motors, then people-wound motors have a limited market at the higher price.
IMHO, you don't need 'em any more - modern x1, x2 and x3 motors, combined with the speedo programmes, are just so smooth on the gearing we can carry with 3300s.
