Losi do a very good shock tool.

Have a look HERE (http://www.teamlosi.com) for it.

screw the collars all the way to the top of the body till theyll screw no more, then get a permanent marker and make a line which goes from the top hexagonal bit at the top of the shick and through the collar too, this way youll know each time you do 1 exact rotation. mark all shocks.

The shocks need to be equal side to side an not front to back. alos it doesnt matter if the rideheight is different slightly its the preload that needs to be equal.

Go back to the clip in plastic spacers. These can be used on either threaded or smooth bodies and are a good way to ensure a pair of shocks has the same pre-load.
(you don't have to leave them on the shocks with the threaded bodies, just use them for measurement)

wats the point in that? ??? Seems a very pointless and buckyish thing to do. Just mark the shocks with a permanent marker wen they are totally uncrewed an screw each down the same number of turns. Simple as.
