View Full Version : Mr Dump!

I ran one of those new peak vantage motors (10x1) today, and I had a problem with the car dumping, with over 90 secs left to race! :o
I started out with 37mm/rev, which I knew would probably be miles too high. However, throughout the meeting this was reduced gradually to 26mm/rev, and the gain in runtime I got was very little. :( However, even with this insanely low gearing the motor didn't seem to lose any top end power. :D Even on 30mm/rev, I couldn't use full throttle anywhere because it was so fast! Even on 2/3 throttle, nobody could stay with me on the straight! ;D I can run 40mm/rev with a 12x2 quite easily, but the car feels much slower with my orion 12x2 and this gearing. ???
I don't really want to gear any lower, so I was wondering whether to put my orion 12x2 armature in the vantage (V2) can. Will this give me comparable performance to a peak 12x2 armature? ???
I'm glad I had the problems today, otherwise I would have been dumping all day at the national next weekend! ::) :(

Have you thought about changing the speedo settings to a much softer setting?

Try a receiver pack, that might give you a bit more runtime, but I doubt you'll get an extra 90 seconds.
Other than that, try limiting the throttle high point. If you have a KO Vantage turn it down from 150 to about 130. Don't know for other handsets.

I've tried receiver packs before, and as you say, the extra runtime gained is neglegable, plus its another 30g of ballast. :-
I don't see how turning the high point down on my radio will help, seeing as I was barely reaching 2/3 throttle anywhere anyway! Nevertheless, I shall try it when I run the car again tomorrow! ;)
I'll try a softer setting on my speedo, as I think its on a pretty punchy one at the moment. Other than that I can't think of anything else other than to go back to a 12x2 in the vantage can. :( ???

I wouldn't suggest turning down the EPA, but running a softer setting on the speedo should help. Also, sometimes running a higer gearing can help too if you can keep the corner speed up.

This could be stating the obvious but...
Are you sure you did not rebuild the motor with 90 degrees of advance by mistake as the new revolution end bells are not so clear as to theit orientation as the old type.
A 10x2 should last easily on 32-34mm/rev at M.K. If every thing else is o.k then I would be worrying about my batteries if I were you!
Mark,
Another 'stating the obvious' - are you sure that 2/3 of your stick travel is 2/3 of the throttle curve? On my LRP Quantum, 1/2 of the stick movement is not half the throttle curve. It might be that 2/3 of your stick movement is a lot more than 2/3 of the throttle curve!
I use a 10 x 2 Orion Core on 40 to 42 mm/rev, and didn't dump on the high-grip track at Mold. I'd have thought your V2 was more efficient than my older design.

I have just been talking about that on the phone to someone!! I'm going to change my ESC to a lower punch setting, as it was on maximum punch because I was running a 12x2.
I'm not sure about my cells, they are about 9 months old, and I use each pack twice a week, sometimes three. I could last easily with a 12x2 geared at over 40mm/rev, so as I say I'm not sure. ???
I will investigate the 180 deg. timing you've suggested mark, as I did have the motor apart to have a quick look before I installed it, and as you say there is nothing that clearly marks which end is which (although there is a tiny silver slot on one end of the endbell, which I took as being the top half). ???
Mark,
If your cells power the 12 x 2 easily on that gearing, I would reckon they are in the ballpark. I think that the punch setting and the timing are more likely sources of your woes!! HTH :)

I raced again last night.
I used my 12x2 in round one to make sure I had a respectable qualifying time.
For the rest of qualifying, I used my 10x1 again, and the car still dumped (I got about an extra 20 secs with a lower punch setting). For the final, I borrowed a pack of cells off someone, and the car just got to the end! ;D I don't think the pack had been equalised for a while, and I charged it at 5A because I was in a hurry! I geared the motor at 34.5 mm/rev.
So I conclude that I do indeed need some new cells, :( so you were right in the first place pete! ;D
And my prize, Mark, is to relieve you of that obviously troublesome motor for some races in my car at Wickham!!! See you there - with motor?? LOL ;D (Actually, I'm almost serious!! ;))

I hope to be able to run the motor at wickham, so long as I can borrow some cells off someone at my club! If not, its back to the 12x2. (If I have to use the 12, I might put it in the vantage can)
