View Full Version : Tyre Choice?
Having added a 10R5 to the racing stable, I now need to add some black round things. I suspect many others are, or will be, in the same situation.
In the UK there seems to be a choice of Jaco, BSR and GRP? (not UK yet?). I have also seen CRC on US sites.
For those of you with Pro10 and now GT10 experience, I would be grateful if you could post your thoughts on tyre combos for both carpet and tarmac, plus diameters, additive useage etc.
Also is it likely that ultimately a 'spec' tyre will be used?

Hi Rob,
The Jaco and CRC lilacs are readily available from AMC these seem to work on most carpets. I expect double pinks (Jaco BSR and TM) will also be popular indoors I have also run on the old favorites grey and purple with no problems.
Tarmac will probabally a different kettle of fish, limited testing to date sugests Jaco pink, green and aqua and Corally silver star rears work well along with a double pink fronts.
Currently thereis not enough info to go for a control tyre the first year but the 10th committee are going to keep this under review this year for future seasons. I think on carpet control tyres will be used but on tarmac there are too many variables.

Another vote here for the Jaco Lilac 'control' tyres, and Jaco double-pink for indoors. Eitehr works fine, with the 2x pink giving a tad more grip in most situations for low/medium grip tracks.
Indoors, these are relatively heavy cars, with lots of rubber available, powered by 10.5 motors. The Lilacs are going to be very popular, because not only do they grip well, they seem to wear like iron! Outdoors it may be a question of more throttle control than you're used to with a TC, and then tyres are per Jason's list. Good fun guaranteed, either way!! HTH :)

silly question, but do you run the same compound front and rear? or is it like 1/12th where you have different front to rear?
So far, I have run the same front and rear, and the Lilac control tyres are used all round. Looking at the forums in the US, I don't see anyone running different compounds front and rear. The cars are very stable, and a good time is down to the driver! HTH :)

We've run pan cars for years and everyone runs the same tyres front and rear on carpet. Due to the lack of available tyres we've used greens all round that were the original kit tyres and the most available alternative until recently. Pinks have been a lower wear alternative, although most stick with greens as double pinks and magentas don't give as enough grip on our carpet. We are looking at trying the Jaco lilacs in the new year. Harder compounds seem to keep the same balance but vary the levels of grip.

I've found that outdoors Jaco Pinks rear and dbl pink fronts seem to work really really well running mod. Indoors i've been playing around with TRC Megenta rears and Jaco dbl Pink fronts running either 19t or 27t and the car handles brilliantly. When running mod indoors either a 9x3 br or 5.5t bl i've found pinks on the rear and dbl pink fronts are the best combo to run, i've also played with other tyre combo's but these seem to work best for me..

For now no - I think tyre choice needs to be free to encourage entries in this new class.
If we get to larger indoor racers with this class in the future, then yes I'd see the control tyres used successfully in World GT being specified. It helps that the carbon effect wheels of the Jaco Lilac control tyres look stunning. I'm also impressed with the purple "spec" strip in the BSR tyres too.
Outdoors is a different kettle of fish. Seems to me there are too many different surfaces, conditions, and car setups/driving styles to make a control spec tyre work.
Thinking out loud for a moment (everyone ok with that?) there is something we could consider well into the future. Could be spec tyre and more controlled motor rules would work as an entry class. And open tyre choice and more open motors for the serious racers.
For now let's focus on getting the class up and running, with healthy entries and cracking racing :D

I really appreciate the responses from everyone - very helpful.
Just one quick question - Mark refers to the stripe in the BSR tyres and I think I am correct in saying the CRC have the same on their spec tyre - are they therefore the same tyre ?

I think the tyres are made and marketed as CRC but they are mounted on a BSR wheel. I guess Frank is just buying in the wheels. I'm sure CRC will tool up there own wheelin the future.

Given it would take a fair bit to get a purple foam strip in the middle of a black foam tyre, I'm pretty convinced the tyres CRC sell are made by BSR. As Jason says the wheels are identical too.
I'm impressed for carpet racing that there are three sources of a Lilac control foam tyre.
By the way does anyone have experience of running any other compunds on carpet? I've got some Green tyres at the bottom of a box, and we might just need to try them at the Autosports show ;)

I've found that Jaco Pink/Dbl Pink, Corally Gold(Hard)/Silver TRC Pink/Megenta all work really well on the rear on carpet, on a low bite carpet i.e Plymouth the softer work better and on Torquays carpet which is medium bite the megentas work better as they free the back end up. Regarding fronts i've found that Jaco dbl pinks work pretty much everywhere weither its indooors or out, Purples are good but make the car push abit...
My car is a CRC running standard out the box setup with a 9x2 motor on 4 cells....
From memory greens were the tyre of choice back in the day of pro10s...

Double pinks all round for me - work outdoors and in with a 10.5 and a steady thumb on the throttle! Excellent at Chesterfield, and I see no reason the carry any other compound. My car (BMI DB10R) seems to like these and the Lilacs and handles very well on both.

If you are short of grip at the Autosports your set of greens will fix that. They chunk easily though and obviously wear faster.
Then again we might need the extra traction as we've been running 6 cell with 19T motors or 4 cell with 10T motors in narrow pan cars for the past few years.
Outside at Aldershot jaco aqua or Corally silverstar rears and pink fronts works pretty well in the dry. Run jaco purples on the front but they have tended to push a bit - last forever though!
Never remember running the same compound front/rears in pro-10 although it was a long time ago. Think we might have used virgin (never been used with additive) greens all round in the semi-damp when it was too dry for proper damps but too damp for additive.
Not run indoors - that what a 12th car is for!!
Looking forward to Aldershot in the cold on Sunday - would be good to see a 4 cell /10.5T car there for comparison if anyone fancies a visit.
