x1 (single) winds have more power in the lower part of their powerbands wheras the x4 (quads) have more power in the upper part of their powerbands so if you race on smaller tracks you are better of with a lower number of winds and vise versa ::)
It indicates the number of wires wound in parallel around the poles of the armature.
x1 means a single wire - all stock motors are singles.
x2 means two wires are wound in parallel around the poles of the armature - a double.
x3 - a triple, x4 a quad, x5 a quin ....
There are sound 'physics' reasons why this makes no difference at all, yet in fact it does make a difference. The characteristics of singles, doubles, triples, etc. are used to tune motor power to a circuit, chassis or driving style.
Just so that you know we all sing from the same hymn sheet on characteristics ...
Odd winds are the racing engines of electric R/C - powerful at the top end but less torque low-down. Even winds are the diesel engines - torquey low-down with lower peak power. So if you race on smaller tracks you are better off with even number winds (double, quad) than odd numbers.
See, that's exactly what Russell said - NOT!!! LOL ;D My comments are what I find, Russell has different findings. If you want a great all-rounder, try an Orion 12x3 Orbital Pro BB - seems to have some of both worlds if you gear it correctly, and not too expensive to buy or service. HTH :)
