what cells are recommended these days, my old gp 3300s 3700s and IB 4200 are getting a bit old now.
I can get GP4300s from ebay at £52 for 3 x 4 packs, are these any good?

the Yuntong 4300's are very stable and a pretty spot on cell
the east power 4600's or 4200's are again stable and again spot on. I beleive schumacher are matching some? and have heard they are top notch.
if you want the most power an IB4600 would do the job but they are totally unstable and will last all of a few meetings.
for ease of availability and performance i'll ditto what sam said Dave. Demon Power Yuntong 4300's. Come assembled too which is cool:cool:

if you can hang on till next year demon will be matching the ib4600's, at the moment the demon 4300s are the dogs!

thanks guys, how many sets are you running, I used to get by quite happily with one set, is there really any point in having loads?

3 sets in a perfect world so they have time to cool enough to charge again.

2 - 3 sets are fine. as batteries after a good cycle before the meeting, only really get going at optimum performance on their 2nd and 3rd runs. so really 2 packs will be more than enough dave

tried running 1 pack last week cos I couldnt be bothered to change them, seemed to make no diference, car was really quick in the final (shame the driver wasnt!) May just get one pack and see how we go.....

no you rearly need two packs as your cells need time to rest before they get recharged

Nicholas, For a long time I ran one set of cells and did not notice any diference in performance, and I do think this may be part of the urban myths surrounding cells!!!
Am going to run some tests over the next few days contrasting charging cells, partially discharging then resting before recharge against charging/discharging with no rest.
By discharging by (say) 1400 mah this will simulate what we typically take out of the cells, and by measuring the voltage on discharge at set time intervals it will be possible to see whether there really is any difference.
Will publish the results later this week.....

its not just that dave.its the fact that how long will 1 pack last???especially after being charged, ran, charged etc etc.and if the pack goes pop you dont have another decent pack.id get 2 to be safe and then you know they have enough time to cool before a charge and run.
if your only going to get 1 then i think i may have a pack of yuntongs i dont use that you can have m8;)

dave,
I have IB4600's and 4500's and 4300's that I will not be using anymore as I have stopped racing mini's. Was going to ebay them, but have a try at the weekend with a pack or two if you want.

OK results of an initial test.
- charge from cold (after run last week, so only a top up)
- discharge at 15 amps for 5 minutes
- recharge immediately at 4.0 amps(as per initial charge)
- immediate discharge at 15 amps
results:
MinsVoltage mah temp
1st run 13.90 start
25.90 after charge
0 5.17
1 4.80 253
2 4.67 495
3 4.62 735
4 4.58 987
5 4.52 1253
2nd run 34.00 start
0 5.31 44.30 after charge
1 4.87 249
2 4.77 496
3 4.72 734
4 4.66 990
5 4.58 1260
any conclusions?
- hardly conclusive, but temp doesnt seem to matter in fact the 2nd run at high temp was actually slightly better by around 0.1 volt or 2%
- the temp after 2nd run was dodgy at 44.3c near cut off
- Test was savage, even charging the same pack between heats there would be some time after the heat (whilst marshalling!) and the cells would be charged before the next heat, both of which would allow the temp to fall
How many packs are needed?
- It may not help to have 5 separate packs cells may be better on the second or 3rd run
- 2 sets could be sensible to keep temps down for longer life
Perhaps the biggest conclusion is I need to get out more!!!!
Simmond and Terry, thanks guys will chat on Saturday......thats if you are coming this week Terry?

maybe there m8 ill see on the day.
the 2nd run on a pack of cells are better but they still need to breathe.
if you want the pace that smithy, westy, potter have, etc etc you need to be using 2 packs really.just my opinion
