Ive been having a bit of a problem with my front diff.(Xray)
When i first used the car,my diffs were good,But after a couple of race meeting, when i turned a wheel to see how smooth the diff is,the diff felt tight, but when i held the wheels & spur to see how tight it is it was'nt that tight Infact it felt looser than the rear..

So ordered some carbide diff balls & new diff rings,& installed the diff ets,And it was as smooth as the rear-but after 2-3 meetings, its become tight again when turning just one wheel-but the diif dont feel cruchie,But it still slips when holding the spur etc-so this problem is making it hard to set the diffs up properly

Were as my rear diff still feels silky smooth & thats not been touched since ive had the car.

That sounds like the thrust bearing has gone. This is in the longer of the two outdrives and is held in by a c clip. Pop it out and see what it looks like is what I would suggest.

Hi, i agree with Mat about the thrust bearing because these can last for months but can also last for about 2 runs all depends, its one of those things i'm afraid. If changing the thrust bearing doesn't work check the diff pulley because i had this problem and the pully web was actually too thick for the diff balls so i was unable to tighten the diff which is an absolute night mear when all you want to do is race.

Hi
I had a similar problem with one of my diffs in the evo2. It took me ages too work out but it was very simple to fix.
When i first built the diffs up i overtightened one of them and bent the circlip that holds the thrust race in. This is difficult to spot because you can rebuild the diff, set it up and it feels fine but after a few runs the damaged clip moves out of the ridge it is supposed to sit in. This means the diff can't tighten up and it slips.
When the diff is like this you can tighten the action of the diff as much as you like but it will still slip. If anyone else has this problem just change the circlip and build the diff again.

i changed the thrust bearing but no joy!
I couldn't get the C clip out,so i got some one else to do it-but the c,clip is now bent.& when i installed the new thrust bearing the c'clip wasn't open enough and could turn in the groove easily..
How do you get the c,clip out with out damaging it?

Ive brought the spring steel diff that needs completly assembling-i was hoping it would come pre-built like the one that comes with the Kit.
Is it easy enough to get the c,clip in with-out having special tools..
also how do you know if the web is to thick(ive got the low ratio pulleys)

It sounds much simlar to Robs obove post(my problem)

Also is it o.k to use the thick black grease that i used for the TC3 Thrust bearings?

thanks steve

Tweasers what i used to use on cat c clips.

Hi Steven, To get the c clip out you'll need some c clip pliers. They are'nt that expensive and any decent tool shop should have them. But make sure the ends (the bits that go into the holes in the c clip) are long enough and small enough to reach into the diff half and fit into the c clip.
I use a pair that were originally bought for the cat 2000 but they are not the right size for the Xray, so i have been bending the c lip to get it out then using a new one. I have been using cat 2000 c lips as they seem a little more substantial than the xray ones, plus i've got some spares :o
To get the clip in just persevere it goes in quite easily without bending it.
I use associated black grease for the thrust races and it works fine for me.
I think the 'web' thats been talked about is the one in the thrust race so i does'nt make any difference what pullys your using as its in the diff.
