i don't know if this should be in the modified motor section or not - it is specific to Xray....
has anyone got any recomendations for gearing a peak V2 12x1 HT in a T1R ?.
current : 96t spur, 21t pinion, 1.77 pulleys, rubber (63mm dia.) tyres
track : carpet, tight, longish (20m) straight
motor is very hot (i.e. you can't hold it) after a 5min race.
car is very free with no binding
any help would be appreciated :)

try dropping to a 20 and see what happens, if it is still getting very hot go down to a 19

excuse my ignorance :- - is it right that the motor may be getting too hot if its undergeared too much i.e. revving its nuts off for too long ?
the belt is rubbing on the motor can even using 21/96 but i will try the lower gearing as well

I moved this topic to a better suited section, so hopefully you will receive more help/advice.

Seems to me that the low ratio pulleys are a must have in stock but might not matter as much on a modified.
So to get the gearing down you might have to go back to the standard pulleys, thats got to be better than the belt rubbing on the can.
Then you can a least have a play with gearing with out overheating the motor.
This is what im going to do when i get mine ;D

i ran mine on a 17/96 on a similar sized track and it was very very quick, if only my rear diff wasn't knackered i would have done alot better :(

Under gearing a motor will not cause it any harm. It is current (amp draw) and temp. that kill commuters.
Motors will always get hot, the critical thing is if it is fast or not and if you are going flat.
I could finish a race with a cool motor but my car would not have been going very fast!
I have just done the maths you are running 24.46mm/rev which is slightly low for a 12t, I normally run around 27/28mm/rev on a slightly smaller indoor track than the one you describe.
I would just go up one tooth on the pinion from where you are and see how it goes.
