I might be going mad here, but I seem to remember, back in the day, something called a Schumacher stock car...anyone remember these?

I'm pretty sure that Schumacher didn't MAKE a stock car, but also I'm sure I remember there being a lot of talk of these in the past. It may or may not have had a semi-metallic top-frame and was similar to todays 1/12th circuit cars in terms of design of the front and rear chassis.

Ring a bell anyone?

Ahhhh, so it DID exist! What was the deal with these? Was it Schumacher circuit car parts or something? It's been doing my head in!

Yes they did exist, parts were sourced from a schumacher c type car, the idea came from the notorious Trevor Tennant. With the help of Cecil Schumacher I believe.

The top chassi was sectional, you had a front and rear beam, two side rails, and two cell protection rails, the side rails and rear beam bolted on to two aluminium sections, the motor bolted onto a special pod that rocked on three mounting points that were adjustable by squeezing o rings, and there was a wishbone and not a beam in the front, with the wheels being mounted on barrels and the wheels held on by o rings, some cars had the rear wheels mounted on sleeves, there was also a further adjustable piece on top of the motor pod.

For a bit of history, Phil Smith from the rugby club won the first Stockcar Worlds in Manchester with a Schumacher type car that was built by Ian Bingham, also of the Rugby club.

One of the early cars can still be seen at the Urmston club in Manchester, it is a rolling chassi's

That's awesome, thanks for the info Mark! Anyone still running one? Parts availability aside, it sounds like a pretty decent spec car...

Basically a complete Schumacher C car squeezed under a stock car top chassis. It was called the Schumacher Outlaw and it's performance was so much better than the Mardave and Lectricar stock cars at the time there was a lot of effort from people to try and find a way of banning it.

Is that what happened then, eventually? Just wondering why they're not too common anymore...

It wasn't too common as it cost at least twice the price of the others available. The home made specials that followed that used similar designs were a lot cheaper as well.

If today there was a choice of a Mardave V12 at £55 and a Schumacher V12 at £160 how many would go for the Schumacher version even if it is just a bit faster, or how many would buy the Mardave version and add one or two bits from the Schumacher V12.

I have a complete one in my Stock car museum... i will try and take some pictures of it and post them up here...

but a lot of the modern scratch built cars now use parts from them... as well as the design..
