View Full Version : Gearing between a 3.5 and a 4.5?

Being a newbie when it comes to modifieds/brushless I’m trying to get my head around the differences with gearing. I’m currently using a 4.5 Novak at my local track (Cotswold), last Saturday kept it geared at around 7 FDR. It seemed to perform very well, although lacked a little in initial acceleration.

If I was to change to a 3.5 Novak, how would this motor differ? Less torque/more refs or all-round better performance?

Would I need to change gearing? And if so, in which direction.

Any advice/comments would most appreciated. :D

You were over-geared on the 4.5 - go down a pinion or two and with a 3.5 you will need to go down even further still.
The 3.5 will be much thirstier on the power front - you will be better off sticking with the 4.5 particularly when it warms up and the grip is better.

Thanks for the reply Mike.
Any ideas on a good starting point for West London with the 4.5 Novak?
