Race Report

Well it had been much talked about and long awaited and it didn’t disappoint!! With World Hot rod champion, national ministock champion, Irish hot rod champion, Irish banger & ministock champion and Southern Irish hot rod champion all in attendance it was always going to be a hard fought meeting. With the unique format of 4 qualifying heats on the Friday night at Ballymoney raceway and another 4 on the Saturday at Annahilt raceway this meant 2 set ups were needed.

On the Friday night the hot rods were mighty fast on the wide open surroundings of Ballymoney. With Chris and Rob Jones setting the pace as both were kept apart in the heats. Dave was giving Chris a hard run for his money in all heats and was all over the gold roofed mini at points. In bangers Teggy was having it all his own way taking all 4 heat wins. Young Jonny McDougle made he car very big at times and some big hits from Ali Basher and Ricky Elliott were great to watch! Mouse also debuted his well prepared Granda limo but speedo problems in heat 1 made him sit out the rest of the heats. In ministox there was really only one guy to watch. National Champion Kyle Bouston. With Martin missing his flight and not getting to do heats at Ballymoney this just left the Irish champion and National Champion to battle it out. Jonny Teggart was still getting to grips with his manic leaving Kyle to sail off into the distance.

Saturday morning got off to an early start for most with people looking to get a good set up for the big race. In the hot rods Rob and Chris finally met. Rob and Chris were never far apart in the heats with less than a lap separating the pair at times. Finally putting in an appearance Martin too looked very quick. Kyle was having problems with his shell while Ali and Roy seemed to struggle with power. Ricky Elliott was looking sharpe in his Starlet having done some work over night and Mouse was enjoying his outing in the ex Jones 205 and was giving the guys a good run on his home track. In Ministock heats Jonny had sorted his handling problems out and with plenty of power from the LB mechanic Kyle was now being pushed in the heats. Mouse was having a run out in the minis to but radio problems hampered him all day and Martin debuted the new Diamond Mini but lack of wheel nuts in the heats slowed it down slightly!! Bangers saw Ali and Teggy share wins with at times only 1 car finishing races.

Final time had come!! Hot rods had Chris on pole with Rob behind. Dave, Kyle, Martin and Ricky all qualified for A final. Chris got off in the lead but Dave was all over his bumper and took the lead for a spell. Dave clipped the inside rail allowing Chris and Martin to pass. That seemed to unsteady the Ballymoney man and Kyle followed Martin dropping Dave down to 4th. Rob too seemed to be unsteady at times and couldn’t get into his rhythm however this didn’t slow the action down with the top 5 separated by less than a lap!! Chris took the win from Martin and Kyle.
In ministock Jonny got off to a rocket of a start from 3rd place on the grid and took the early lead but after getting involved in a pile up this upset the Banbridge man and Kyle was able to pick up the bits and win by 2 laps with Martin picking up 3rd this time with all four wheels on the car!!
Bangers saw Ali basher taking a well deserved win after putting Ricky and Teggy over the barrier and out of the race.
B final for hot rods saw mouse sail into the early lead but concentration slipped and allowed Roy to pass and take the win.

The curtain closed on the track but another opened as it was prize giving time!! Great trophies were supplied by the organisers and a big thanks to them for these. A few sore heads come Sunday morning im sure but was well worth it.

Just want to pass on a few thanks. First of all to Mouse, David and Roy for organising the event and giving us 2 great tracks to race at. Second thanks to Mouse other half for the lovely Irish stew and scones. My 3 plates full was lovely!! Finally thanks to the guys who made the big effort to cross the Irish sea. Some had further to go than most, aint that right Martin, but was great to see you here and racing on these shores.

Another event is being planned for later in the year. So hope to see a lot more making the trip. I can announce that there will be NI drivers at the Hereford national event in June and we look forward to the challenge guys.

Again big thanks to all involved and hope to see you at a track very soon.
