View Full Version : Problem with Novak 13.5

I don't have a problem with the equipment ( I love the zero maintenance ), the problem I have and the other racers at my local club who use these motors is that we are being singled out for running them.
I agree they have a lot of torque and are consistent but there isn't a massive difference to a good 27t, we are now classed as modified!!
I just wanted to know if anyone else is getting this from there local club, we have a AGM later this year and I can see them being put into there own heat which will be a shame as there is only a few running them and will probaly push me to another club.
Unfortunately the 13.5 is now proving to be quicker than a 27T Stock even thought it is no faster in a straight line (unless the straight is a short one).
Even the Novak 13.5 EX model (bonded rotor) is a little quicker than an average 27T stock.
The 10.5 however is proving to be very close to a 19T in performance, both it the slow parts and the fast parts so I would recommend racers look more to the 10.5/19T class than to try and win the argument in the 13.5/27T class.
Aldershot has adjusted the rules to its 19T class to allow BL down to a minimum wind of 10.5 and a maximum Kv of 4200 (they also allow LiPo packs (7.4v max) as long as they are in a hard protective case when in the car)

Bomber, our club's view is that long term the future is brushless, so we run 13.5 along with 27T and 10.5 with 19T.
People are migrating over slowly and I suspect as the price break falls around Xmas, most regular drivers will be looking to move over
I'm really hoping the national classes change over to BL because i think that will push alot more people over.

LRP state that a 15.5 is equivellant to a 27 turn stock motor. Others say a 13.5 is.
So who's telling us lies then?
I will let a few people answer before revealing.......

:(Shame we live so far from MK which appears to have a grasp on current developments and is progressive enough to have a common sense approach to them.:)

I run a club, and as Dave Treacy said in his post, we too are of the same opinion.
I also agree with the comments made by NiMo. The only thing I can suggest is that you try and get as much accurate information together as you can before your club's upcoming AGM and present it to them at that time.
I also truly believe that this time next year there will be as many racer's running BL systems as run brushed, if not more. Perhaps it might also be worth mentioning this at the AGM.
Good luck

Many thanks for your coments, i have noted them for the AGM.
I personally feel these motors are much fairer, I agree there is some difference between some models but this is a much smaller difference than brushed motors i:e someone skimming every run and putting new brushes in to someone running there motor until it stops.
I think until big meetings like Carpetwars Etc jump on the band wagon they will always have there critics.
I will just have to convince everyone to buy one.

nigel, i hear that at your last meeting the 10.5 lipo runners where actually as fast as some of the 4.5/3.5 brushless runners in 5 cell???
is this correct?

a vote was held at the maritime club last night for members to decide if to stay 27T brushed or go to pro-stock(19t,10.5, lipo etc) when the club moves to its new permanent venue in the new year.
i expected a great resistance from the existing members, but i think 10 voted to stay 27T and the majority voted prostock.
the prostock class would seem ( dont quote on this ) that all motors up to 19T and 10.5 can be used, included 13.5,11.5 27T 23T etc etc....a good move in my opinion.
as people of Maritime know....change is not easy there :) x x

Not correct
The 5cell racers were still a lap up on the fastest 10.5/19T runners, and were noticably faster in a straight line, but they were only on 21 lappers while we were on 20 lappers.

Hi
I have this problem in Australia, One of the clubs I run at allows 13.5 in Stock, the other one does not yet until the vote in Jan 2008.
Personally I cant really see the arguement, there is a small difference between them in a straight line, and if you have a good brushed stock motor it can easily stay in touch. Again it is all down to car setup, driving and consistency at the end of the day.
I think the main reason is cost - A club may not want to see new members having to fork out the big bucks just to stay competative or feel that a member is at a disadvantage if they dont have the latest and greatest.
What I feel should be happening if the club decides to run brushless or introduce a new technology, they should use the power of the club to drive a good bargain with a local hobby shop or supplier to get a deal for bulk. I know clubs in the UK that have done this for batteries etc, and everyone won...
