I reckon I have got a problem with my shocks ...! When rebuilding should the shaft shoot back after being compressed or move back out slowly? I am sure it is the latter but just to be sure?

It's susposed to SLOWLY come back out and all socks should feel the same or "come out at the same rate".
if there shooting out i'd guess you've screwed the cap down with alittle to much oil in the shocks.to cure this i'd remove the lower screw body and let alittle oil out the bottom of the shock and then try again after refitting the lower seals.

If you're using the foam chunks above the bladder in the SD shocks, they will tend to shoot out, unless you're using heavy oil. Personally I don't use them because the rebound they cause feels too harsh to me.
