Social Committee
Hi everyone.
As Dan Rowlands has pointed out, the club is starting to grow, but really it's only the male folk that really know each other, and we are both feeling that maybe we need to broaden the whole community, to strengthen the club, and to build on this new growth we are starting to see.
Therefore, we've decided to start a Social Committee, whose main task is to organise non-racing events, maybe alongside racing, to build all our friendships up, to really get to know everyone better, and to get the non-racing members of our families involved.
So Dan will head up the committee this year, just to get the ball rolling, and he will be looking for volunteers to help organise, and he is also looking for suggestions.
Please feel free to post to this area.

If your looking for an inter club kart challenge am sure I could get a team together from IDMC we have a few members that have had just a little interest in karting over the years ;) ;)
And would be well up for it ;D

Am I missing the point?
The social committee is all about getting AWAY from racing, not doing more.
I thought the idea is for the predominantly male members of the club to get their wifes/girlfriends and non-racing family members involved in activities run by the club, not involving racing, and getting them into the Club Community.
We all enjoy meeting each other as well as going racing, but that doesn't work for our better halves. They find the car racing boring to just watch, and don't want to attend. Why should they? They aren't getting involved, and therefore find it very hard to mix socially with everyone. We all have the racing in common, but what do the other halves know about us as people?
By going karting, we are not going to win any hearts or minds. Gary, I know you have posted saying your wife was complaining about how much racing you were doing? Will this honestly help?
It's a fact of life that not everyone likes motor sport and Dan and I have talked about ways of the club meeting, and involving all our families (and maybe friends!) in social events that don't have a motor sport theme, and we could all get to know each other better, and away from competition, maybe.
This way, we build a stronger community, based on real friendships, rather than just racing associations.
Think about it, and give us some real suggestions that involve everyone.
I mean, we could all just take a picnic (no RC cars allowed), have a proper car rally/treasure hunt (we all go off on a country drive looking for landmarks).
How about fund-raising events? Goodness knows how many people have suggested we spend £2000 on personal transponder system!!! ;D
How about an inter club go-kart challenge, I am sure some of the Kirkcaldy guys could come up and beat you at that as well......
Mmmmm. sounds like fighting talk to me..
I was actually led to believe that the Kirkcaldy club are very picky about the tracks and events they come to race at, or maybe I was miss informed ::)
Yes the point is to make racing fun for the family, not just the drivers ;D It is hard to do but not impossible, our club manages it, so I don't see why SDRCC can't either ;)

Your right Dom an inter club karting event wouldn't help. But as a social event for clubs and business they are really good :) The last time I was at one of these corporate events at Dyce it was the some of the wife's and girlfriends that were the best drivers in their team :o
But there's one thing that they all shared no matter what ability they had that's a big smile each time they got out of the seat and lot's to talk about that happened in their race ;D
It's going to be hard to find some sort of social event that doesn't involve motor sport with all of us being petrol heads n all but you did say alongside racing so another event to consider is some kind of fund-raising endurance race day with a BBQ and things for the kids to do i.e. Bouncy castle, face painting etc. You could always make it a sponsored race and even have a raffle 8)
Another idea would be to find a quiet pub somewhere to meet up perhaps say every month or so ???
Ps Dom are you trying to get me in to trouble in the many years and countless Sundays I've been away racing the one who must be obeyed has never complained. Mind you she's probably glad to get rid of me for the day ;)

Thanks Gary,
Sorry to get you in trouble. My wife complains even if she's had months of notice! Still it's cause she loves me so much, blah, blah, etc, etc....
(I love her too!)
The idea of an open day is atttractive. I was thinking something along these lines, but it'll take planning and a little bit of money.
The best idea is to get a company to put some money in, they get some promotion, we get a bouncy castle, and some nicely printed flyers and posters.
We can get a few stalls, bbq, and put on a wee show, invite people round the pits, and let them ask questions.
We can get handout leaflets from the model shops with good ideas about how to get started and what to buy. Bare essentials, etc
We could get the support of all the model shops, get them to put a proper stall up each, and help promote themselves, and the model car club.
We could get the other car clubs to take a stall as well. After all, we are trying to promote the club, not raise money, and what harm comes from promoting the sport as well. We aren't competing with the other clubs...
But the social committee is there to bring the whole club together, unrelated to the Car Racing. Why doesn't someone organise a bbq, at their home, for club members? Invite other racers, but also get them to bring their familes? It's the season. I'll try and get organised and lead by example...
We have a big bbq down at the track, we should get it going before the July club event. Have a bbq, at the track on the Saturday (12th July). Starting at 6pm. Who's up for that?
This is all getting quite good, in my mind, but again, it's needing some people to take the "bull by the horns" contact Dan, and get yourself round to his house one night every month or two, and talk about these kind of things.
Dom
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Hi all!
I don't get to check this very often so please don't think I am not bothered or not taking it seriously.
Good idea Dom, the barbecue sounds great, will chat to Mark and others about it as I think he has a decent one.
Guys, any suggestions are more than welcome, email me at dan@rowlands7.freeserve.co.uk and all will be noted.
I think DOm's suggestions are really good, I can just visualise the track teaming with folk and a bouncy castle...this would be great! As long as the weather holds of course!
For any of you around the area tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon I will be at the track from about 1 if you want to pop down.
Cheers,
Dan

Hi Dom,
I would like to suggest (organize) a BBQ for the 13th of July. Can you let me know if the BBQ chained to one of the posts near the track entrance can be used to grill the drumsticks/ribs and burgers? (are the racks/BBQ thinys still available)
Regarding the costs involved, I am a Costco/Macro member hence I can buy burgers, buns etc reasonably cheap. I would suggest to sell the items for cost price (rounded up) and profits (if any) will go to the club.
Let me know what you think!
Cheers,
Mark

The BBQ is fine, as far as I know. Ask Johnstone or Bruce if the racks are in the sheds...
I have no experience with it, but this sort of thing requires someone dedicated to manning it. What liabilities are there if no-one was watching it for children going near?
Historically, it's been available for over-nighters, and the tendancy was to fire it up the night before.
I like this idea, and was planning it for the night before the GP, with an impromptu practice session.
But if we can get a regular bbq going on race days, it would be fantastic. The members would support it, I'm sure. This might be something the non-racing supporters would like to take on-board.
It's not a sexist comment, as I do the lion's share of cooking in our house, but how are the wife's and girlfriends placed to do this? Can we try and make the race day a bit more family orientated?
I'll get the price of a s/h bouncy castle and compressor, and see if we can't offer more for the non-racer, on race days!
PS. I've just had another idea. What about a proper play park across from the track? There must be some spare room, and the council might want to develop it...
;D ;D ;D
I have logged on to the net at last!
Great suggestions from all!
Re the bbq, Paula (my better half) has told me she is up for it (the bbq that is) so we have a cook for the 19th! We are on holiday that week so will possibly be heading off to Paris after the race on Sunday (know any car clubs over there? ;) think she'd kill me :o!
Does anybody know what the score is with seling food at the track? Think we'd need a license, unless people just bring their own food and we have a 'party type bbq'?
Get in touch with me and i'll contact the council about this...will await a response.
An unrelated topic: When do we think r/c racing will be totally brushless? These systems seem to be the way forward with fatser speeds and longfer runtimes. They are expensive at the moment but what are our thought? A new topic perhaps???
Off down the beach now for a bite.......see yous all later.
Dan
Oops fatser=faster
and
Longfer=longer.
DOH! ::) :P :-[

Hi Dan,
Finally back on the net, you're working too many hours buddy ! Good to hear from you ! btw, what on earth are you doing at 0430hrs on the net, just home from a good night out on the rhassssss.
Great to hear that Paula is going to help with the BBQ on the 13th of July (maybe Joanne want's to get involved as well! Don't worry too much about contacting the council etc for the BBQ (unless Dom tell us different). I am reasonably sure we don't need it, I don't see a problem asking a small fee per item for the BBQ covering only the costs. We are not going for profit ! It's going to be very informal ! Lets go to Costco and buy a load of burgers/chicken drumsticks, buns and other BBQ food. Don't worry about money, I'll pay for it, if stuff is left I'll take it with me and dispose of it. Possible profit will go to the club (if we don't sell anything, uuuuh it's my tough luck, however with Paula behind the BBQ, who doesn't want to tast a drumstick, hi hi hi). Like I said, let's do it very informal, I am not very much in the mood to do it official. One thing and I have said it already, we have to keep safety very much into account, just don't let people come close (barriered off). It's not like that we are BBQ'ing for the first time so I don't see a problem with this either ! BBQ will only be lighted around 11 hrs for 1200-1400 hrs dinner !
Regarding to the brushless query, Let's set up a seperate modified class including brushless motors, kidding of course don't worry, however, I think in the long run you will save money going for a brushless system (hence one b.less system is in the post, hi hi, just couldn't resist). I spent already a "wee" bit of dosh on modified motors.
Cheers,
Mark
Hey buddy! 8):P 8)
4.30 am?? Must have been a mistake I was fast asleep then!
I am working too hard though true!
We will have a practice bbq this saturday in Huntly...I am driving.
Anyway, very good suggestions. I spoke to Dom and if enough people are eventually interested and buy brushless systems (I know I will if yours is impressive) then a new class could be created!
The sports going this way anyway, they're a little expensive now though.
I spoke to Les today and he is getting a grate made for the bbq at the track - incase we can't find the old one.
Anyway got to go as i have a report to write for tomorrow!
Oh, how many of you guys fancy a 10 pin bowling night down the beach/George Street??? If enough are interested then we'll do it!!!

I'm in!
and while we're at it, does anyone want to play a golf competition, or a snooker competition?
I'm quite happy to help organise them...
Dom
;D GOLF GOLF GOLF GOLF GOLF GOLF ;D
I am very interested....let's organise an outing!!!
Anybody else????
;D Well people it was an EXCELLENT day yesterday and I hope you will all join me in congratulating all in their efforts.
Well done to Mark VdV, Paula and Pat!! Those burgers were top notch!
Anyway, the social committee. It was pointed out to me that I have only been suggesting that us guys do something together. How about we all go out somewhere + our wives/girlfriends???? Let's make the most of this sun!
Thoughts?
I am trying to get a bunch of us and our good ladies togther for a bowling/food night down the beach one weekend.................opinions?? If I get enough interest i'll get it sorted and arrange a date convenient with all of us. ;D
The champ/chump
B.t.w.apologoes for my lack of common sense today when it came to marshalling, honeslty not intentional I was wired to the moon.....miles away. I blame the parents.
8)
slaps Dan with a 10 second penalty on his first leg time and takes the overall win :D
Well guys,
Hopefully the next round will be dry for us! Still no responses for the bowling? No mad rush but to get an idea of numbers would be good.
Take it easy.
Dan ;D
