Anyone got any ideas on how to get the temp on my mod motor in my XXX-4 G+ down?

I've wrecked a motor with a wire coming off the comm due to heat.
I have tried many different ratio's and found the same, sometimes i find it hard to touch after a race.

Everyone else in my club suffers from this problem right enough but I dont want to wreck my new Orion Revolution due to over heating.

Whilst im on has anyone got an idea for gearing a 10x2 Orion revolution or 10x3 Orion Core(not Modified) on a tight indoor track in the XXX-4 G+?

Install a Fan

Fit a heatsink to the motor can

Make sure your Drive frequency on your motor isn't set too low, as that will burn up the comm.

Turn the punch setting down

We've thought about a fan but then thought it would have nowhere to take cool air from as the ambient temperature under that bit of the shell will be very hot anyway, so will it not just blow hot air onto the motor??

We've also thought about a heatsink but it wouldn't fit under the bodyshell.

By drive frequency do you mean timing?

Punch is as Kit On the LRP Quantum Comp, if it was any lower I feel the car wouldn't be as competitive.

It says in the Revolution instruction manual that it is designed to run cooler with its new endbell, will this be true?

You are joking, there is ample room to fit a fan under the shell of a XXXS G+, something like you get on the top of a processor heatsink in a computer.

As for Drive Frequency, it is the frequency the motor is driven at under acceleration, the higher, the cooler the motor runs.

As for Punch, rather than having to stop start, carry more corner speed and turn the punch down, that helps.

Otherwise, there ins't much else you can do other than fry motors.

Plenty of room on a XXXs Not a XXX-4 G+ buggy though LOL theres room for a fan but for a heatsink it would have to stick through the shell, which wouldn't be very marshall friendly I dont think as it would be hot too??

Try a fan. Although it doesn't sem as though it will work it is worth ago as they are only a few pound. I tried one and it worked a treat.

Make sure your gear meshing is not too tight. I have just got a monster and i meshed it too tight and it nearly fried it! :o Ive put a heatsink on and it seems to make it better, also cool it off with a little computer fan after each race ;)

Been cooling after every race, but surely it shouldn't get that hot, I've felt it hot in my TC before but not as hot as this.

I think the mesh is just right.

What kinda heatsink did you use, how did you fit it below the body?

hi i would say your car is well overgeared.
i would start with a ratio of about 9 to 1 and work from there.
gear the motor so it will rev out.
when i find a exact ratio i will post it

brian dunbars setup indoor with orion 10x1 motor.
18/90 spur which if internal ratio same as xxxs 1.83
= 9.15 to 1
revelution style motors do run a bit cooler.

Sounds to me that your transmission is possibly tight. Check the diffs aren't rubbing on the chassis or covers, make sure you assembled the layshaft the right way round too. Don't crank the wheel nuts down either. Belt tension should be set so it just doesnt skip. With the car as run on the track but with the pinion off you should be able to push the car really freely, i.e. rolls 3-4 meters with a shove.

It helps to cut vents in the shell.

Gearing on a 10 turn core with kit spur should be about an 18/19 pinion on a short track. I've run as low as a 17 though on really stop start tracks.

Also don't run a heatsink on the motor, these work in TC where the airflow around the motor is good, hence the extra surface area helps to conduct the heat into the air, in a buggy the airflow is really poor inside the shell, so a heatsink just acts to hold the heat on the motor, meaning it takes longer to cool down.

The new motors run a lot cooler, but you shouldn't be struggling as much as you are with the old ones.

I agree with Richard Cree, check all your transmission is free first.

After that, try 17 / 92 gearing. I generally run 18T for a 10 turn motor and increase one tooth for every turn of motor. So a 12 turn will run 19 or 20 pinion. Depends how tight the track is.
On the big track at Watford on Sundays, I will run 18 / 92 for a 10 turn and 20 / 92 for a 12 turn.

My car is as quick down the straight as Simon Reeves and Ellis Stafford, just not round the corners !!!! Maybe thats my driving ;D ;D

Some people try to tell me i'm undergeared, but the car is fast and the motor is warm. So I will continue with these ratios. They work for me. Give it a try.

It's just that some people on here have told me that I'm undergeared before !!

I know what you run and Darren Bloomfield, Ellis, Simon Etc and I run within 1 tooth of you guys. You know how it is.......
