Only a couple of weeks after the national at southend, we return for rounds 7 and 8 at Bedworth! The saturday would be wet all day, and the rain persistant to say the leat. So very little practice was done by the team as they waited for the weather to let up! In the end it would be around 3 in the afternoon before we managed to get on the track to practice, which would only be for a short period of time as cars needed to be rebuilt in the evening! Think we all did around 3 runs and the cars were a state, but the re-asuring thing was that they were reasonably balanced! Lacked steering, but had more to try in the morning!
Sunday came, bring very changable weather! It would cause no end of problems! With the track being 50/50 for the top heat at times it would be difficult to put in a decent time! I made a mess of the first to rounds, in the first accidently put a pack of flat cells in my car and then missing 47secs of the second run because I changed tyres at the last min! But it would all be down to the last round as the track had dried out enough to use slicks. At the end of the 5 mins, Chris K would be second on the grid, myself 6th and Steve Lissamore 7th, having solved problems he had been having over the past few months! Richard would end up having a mare and didnt make it unfortunatley!
The first final would look to be dry, by in true form, 10 mins before the final it tarted to rain... and it got heavier! Russ and Chris wouldnt get into their grid slots before the 10sec countdown and recieve a 30sec penalty which would hamper them both! Into the first corner (in the driving rain) there would be a small pile up allowing Dewi in third to take up second behind russ and allow Steve lissamore and myself into 3rd and 4th! Steve and I would have a good race, he made that PHI so wide, but he went a little wide on the corner infront of the rostrum after the straight, and I would just get down the inside of him... a little door clattering latter and we were both sideways allowing Keith Robertson into thrid, then I would follow in 4th and Steve in 5th! Keiths car was flying, considering he bined it off the line, he was working his way up the field nicely! Due to Russ' 30sec penalty I would be promoted to 3rd giving Dewi the win and Keith 2nd.
The second final would present us with a 50/50 style track! I wouldnt even make the first corner, due to the coupler screws conming loose! Basically, car pulled left, went on the grass, and then the wishbones, hinge pins come off! Nothing broke, just bad car prep I guess! Never mind! But Those that did race had the task of dealing with and ever drying track, and the 50/50 conditions made it tricky for the drivers to get around with the different grip levels! I cant remember what happened in the first corner, but all I rememeber is when I looked up, Dewi was in the lead once again, Stu Cann in second and a whole gaggle of cars fighting for 3rd! Russ got tapped going onto the straight, and his car ended up on the grass! He would end up fighting his way from last to finish 4th I believe, which considering how far back he was, was a sight to watch... well done Mr Williams have to say. But Dewi would pull away from Stu, who would be caught by third place man (????? qualified 10th) who would be defending 3rd from Russ! Stu would come home 2nd, and Russ 4th after a neck and neck race to the finish line with the guy that qualified 10th! Was good to watch.
The Corally team didnt seem to have much success this weekend, but thats the way it goes from time to time I guess. Chris still leads the Championship, I have no idea where that puts me, as its very close between myself and Mr Robertson! Our next national goes to Wrexham, where hopefully we will have a bit better luck on track and with the weather! Considering this is summer, the weather is pretty poor to say the least!
Well done to Dewi, he diserved the win after a brilliant drive!
