thanks

For running in car parks, fields etc... its ok. I wouldn't buy one to race it though; it wouldn't compare to a losi/schumacher/associated

They are pretty simple and old fashioned. Like every car mardave make , or used too!

I thinks its a bad decision for mardave to have put all their eggs in one basket. (ie by stopping manufacturing the mini, and just sticking to the hot-rod). I can't see how he's going to benefit from doing it. Lee (owner of mardave) came out with all these great ideas and innovative suggestions, but has yet to provide any evidence of them (like the diff that was supposed to be made for the hot-rod, and I also saw some prototype wheels that looked really good)
Anyway, back to the cobra question.
If you've got the money, buy a losi or associated, they're much better performance wise, and you can guarantee you'll be able to get parts for them.

Mark, do you know Lee personally?
i agree with you about the hot-rod
Is he making mini chassis any more or is it 100% hot-rod from now on

Mardave isn't making the mini chassis any more.
but more models shop are getting them made by someone else, but there are alot more in price.
Lee does have a few more items brewing.

i would buy it
Mark Stiles

Why justin? There's alread saloons and stock cars available that are miles better than anything mardave would produce!
I've met lee a couple of times, and he seems like an alright bloke, but as I said I'm yet to see any evidence of all his ideas.
The prototype wheels I saw were white 5 spoke ones (the current ones are 6 spoke), and there were also some white 15 spoke ones, similar to the pattern seen on the ford focus ST170. Both wheels looked great, but you can't buy them anywhere yet. ???

I'm nearly 17, doing A levels.
Perhaps lee (and even more distinguished manufacturers) should come on here, as this is where most of the racers views are posted. That way, they could create better customer relations by supplying and making what people want!

nobby, you can't be almost 17.
cos you act like your 14 hahahaha
and thats means all drivers will need to look out when you start driving on the real roads.
god help us :P :P :P

Mark Stiles
07-01-2004, 09:50 PM
Its a V50.
No I don't think they're cool, because they don't make the car go any faster. (unlike a red and silver paint job!)
Simmo
07-01-2004, 10:15 PM
unlike some blue paint on the shell, lol
oooh just think of all that extra weight, LED's n such........tut tut
Just kiddin...
What would be a laugh, would be to do a LeMans race - in the dark - Headlights on!!!
Mark Stiles

He's already tried that. We turned the lights off while he was going round the track on tuesday. Would look great with 8 of you going round. Touble is, if you're in a pileup, how do you know which car is yours?!

Old thread I know but I am thinking of buying 2 for myself and my 13 year old son for messing about in a field next to us, I have a couple of Q's first though.
We currently have 2 schumacher mission C/F's.Which we use saddle packs to run.
I also have some stick packs lying around 3000's. Would these run the cobra's or do they have to use 12v ( I think i saw that somewhere.)
Cheers for any more info or whatever

Normal cells will be fine, you don't need 12v.

If I remember right there are two different chassis for the car. One is yellow and one blue. The yellow came with the cobra sport that I had - it ran stick packs. The blue is thinner and runs saddle packs.
I played about with one FOR ages - completely innocently!!! All the oil had gone from the shocks, I don't want to think what the diff must have been like!
It was a cheap fun car till the gear box melted.

I have very fond memories of my cobra (10 years ago) but if you've ANY plans other than bashing don't bother as to make it remotely competetive for racing you'll have to change so much and I'm not sure anyone makes upgrades anymore.
Also the spares are VERY cheap indeed but when I upgraded mine to a Losi XX (as I say 10 years ago) I found I broke significantly less.
Dan
Nothing wrong with a Cobra as a first car for zooming round the garden, street, park or even getting started at club level. They are simple to build/maintain and generally tough as nails. Spares are cheap and (at worst) just a phone call to Mardave away.
As other people have stated, for top level club racing or higher they are a bit archaic and not really up to the job. The kit shocks are terrible compared to Associated/Losi items, the chassis and plastics are very flexible, there aren't too many tuning options and the gearbox is not up to handling the hotter motors of today.
(Although as an aside, I dug my old Cobra of the loft this summer and finished ahead of all the Losi's and all but one Associated at a Bury Metro club meeting. Hadn't laughed so much in ages!)
The blue and yellow chassis are identical in size and shape and will take stick packs or saddle packs mounted inline if you work out a way to strap them down properly.
I saw a couple of new ones going cheap in a shop in October, not sure if they're still there though. PM for details.

Get yourself a second hand losi/associated. A far better way of spending £60 IMHO, even if its only an XX4 or something.
Either that or save the money and spend it on your hot-rod when the need arises.

I guess either associated or a Schuie :D

You can get a half decent second hand B4 team kit for £80-£85 and for me that would be better in every way. Or I've seen B3's for as little as £30-£35 which again would be better IMHO.
