Hello
One of the threads has just worn "again" in the back of my xxxs where diffs housing bolts on!!
I even under tightened the two screws so that they never destroyed the threads.
Does anybody out there know what i can do to stop this because if the other one goes then i've had it.
Do you think it's possible to buy gromets with a metal thread that you can slip in the holes
any help will be greatly appreciated
also does anybody else have this problem
Many thanks

One option it to upgrade to a 3mm cap head screw, as used on everything else except American cars, as these are slightly larger diameter, and a tighter thread.

Thanks for the tip DCM
would that cure the problem or after time will the problem get worse, i really don't want to ruin my chassis as it hasn't been raced properly yet.
thanks Mike

You can buy a 4-40 thread repair grip where you drill the hole larger then thread a metal spring into it as a new thread, better than new!
Try a few specialist tool suppliers for one

If you are going to go for a thread insert kit, first I would check up as to what size holes you will need to used to thread the insert into, and then check to see if there is enough plastic there to hold it.
But, having used them in work, I would suggest the 3mm Cap Head screw first, and just don't over tighten it.

I've got a set of 4-40 helicoils (common thread repair kit). They are fantastic and have saved many a chassis for me.

the 3mm option is quite good, they're holding my xxx-s gear cover on.

Apparently you can get helicoil sets from rs online.

RS do the Recoil range of thread repair.
They don't list 4/40 UNC.

At a guess, you would have to go to a specialist engineering suppliers to get the kit, and it probably wont be cheap.

From J&L Industrial Supply the kit do 4/40 is about £45 plus VAT.

Thanks guys
the thread repair kit will be too pricey for me :'(
I'll try the 3mm screws then i'll give the long screw and nut a go
thanks for all your input

Try the long screws and a nut first, if you have no luck with that, then try the M3 screw.

I have had this problem with the tiny screws on the spur gear plastic cover. I think I will fill it with epoxy and then re-tap it. Cheers for the tip ;)

mini lock nut and long screws, thats how my chassis got through the worlds!

Try the long screw and nut option first as you won't be increasing the overall size of the hole
