With the imminent release of the Phi, I thought it was time for a Phi setup thread.
Find attached a blank setup sheet.

Hi all. Well, myself and Mr Kerswell ran the production PHI's for the 1st time this weekend, along with Mr Childs. Cars went well, still a bit of refinement to do with the set up, but what we ended up with at the end of the day was a well balanced car! Maybe a little too much front end for mod, so some changes may need to be made to make the car easier to drive in mod.

Further set ups for the PHI. This time from Rob Fox, who raced the car at the TORC meeting at the weekend. First time out with the car and he qualifies second and finishes second in 19turn!!! Very good result I think. Well done Rob. Set up is fairly simular to mine and mr K's, just has a few subtle differances.

As promised here is my setup from the first round of the 19 Turn nationals at Snetterton. The car was very easy to drive and very consistent. No great change between new and worn tyres either!

Mine and Steve Lissamores cars differed slightly from Mr K's car... we didn't run the rear roll bars or stiffer springs like Chris did. But apart from that an the diaphrams the cars we the same... but think that we should have followed Chris K's lead in the set up as he was extremly fast to say the least!

Here is the set up that myself and Mr K used at WLRC national at the weekend. Hope it is of some use to those of you out there! any questions about the car, please ask! :)

How do Chris, just wondered what make oil you use? would it be Trinity?
Thanks

Hi Adam, I have only ever used Team Losi shock oil! Never tried anything else as I feel that all the different manufacturers of shock oil vary slightly and its best to stick to one brand!

Yep totally agree! its why I asked :D
Have there been any mod setups for the Phi as yet?
Thanks

Not yet. Andy Childs is doing one for me tonight, so will have one up tomorrow asuming he gets it done for me tonight. He's a reliable fella, so should be up for all to see.

Here is the set up myself and Chris K used at the weekend at the Eastbourn track. Car drives a little loose and does rotate around the front end, have to drive car smooth and not be over aggressive. :)

pro squat at the rear ?
Isn't that anti-squat - that always confuses me
Err... just read the manual, oops - never mind, thought we were adding anti-squat, angling the pin like that made the car fast whatever it is called :D

pro squat the wishbone down at the front up at the back:eek:
why?
what did it do?

pro squat the wishbone down at the front up at the back:eek:
why?
what did it do?
Yup :D
Why? Cos I got confused and thought it was Anti-Squat!
What did it do? Made the back of the car rotate quite a lot, in turn making it blindingly fast around the track (if somewhat scarey at times )
Chris Delves
06-06-2007, 04:49 PM
Agree with Mr K... you had to be on top of the car the whole time and drive as smooth as poss! Which made for intreting driving! lol

Just realised myself or Mr K havent posted our set up from Stonehaven! So here it is! The track we ran fairly bumpy, mainly where the new and old track crossed paths! Car worked pretty well, we were the only two to run one-ways, which made for intresting racing thats for sure! We were competative with the likes of Andy, Chris and Graig, but made a few stupid decisiions in the finals with regards to tyres!

At the weekend we were at WLRC for the BTCC. Chris made some subtle changes to the set up which seem to make the car perform better on the diffent rubber to that which we used at the national. So, here is the set up;
Keith H.

ran the set up with lrp 27 at west london and loved the car. great set up chris and chris.

01-08-2007, 10:54 AM
Here is the set up used by myself and Mr K at the weekend at Wrexham. Qualified 1st and 3rd! Missed 2nd by 0.03seconds! Now thats close! lol Lissamores car is very simular, think he ran less caster, which I think would have been better! With the 6degrees of caster think it hurt the tyres too much! Still can improve time on second run rubber though!

Hi Guys,
Just wanted to pick your brains about the motor, brush and spring combination you used at the Eastbourne open day. I have run the same motor as you used that day with very similar gearing, putnam green and blue but with the standard springs. The motor went off real bad after 3 mins, the only difference being the springs( and my driving lol). Would the green red combination that you ran help or is there another reason you guys used them.
Cheers
Terry.
Steve Lissamore
03-08-2007, 10:35 PM
Hi Terry, from memory the standard springs on the motor are softer than the red/green combo, this would make the brushes and com burn up quicker as it allows for more brush bounce which causes more arcing.
You could also try drilling a small hole in the center of brush face as this seems to help with maintaing performance throughout a 5 minute run.
Other than that check your speedo to see what kind of setting it is on.
I'm sure Mr D and Mr K will have some more ideas
Chris Kerswell
03-08-2007, 11:02 PM
Red/Green Springs - honestly i've not tried anything else for as long as I can remember! One of those things that if it ain't broke don't fix it!
As Steve says, try putting a 1mm hole about 3/4 of the way into the brush face (get it as close to the middle and as square to the brush as possible!). Also try taking the point off both the leading and trailing edges of the brushes, doesn't need to be a lot, just enough to reduce the overlap a bit.
When you say similar gearing, was it higher or lower? I would never recommend to run higher than what we do as we always try to gear as high as you can get away with!! If anything try it about a tooth lower. One of the key points to being able to gear high is having a car that will carry corner speed, if it isn't carrying the corner speed then you are going to have to accelerate harder out of every corner, heating the motor up more each time.
Chris Delves
06-08-2007, 08:47 AM
Hi Terry
Another thong is that the motors performance will drop off due to over heating, so cooling the motor before the race and runing fans is very important! I run 3 on my motors in an attempt to make them live... seems to work, but Chris K does just run the 2!
Red/Green spring combo does seem to be the sweet spot on these motors, every time ive tried something different it has either blown the motor to tiny pieces or its just been too slow.
Trund
06-08-2007, 08:58 PM
Thanks for the help!
Forgot to mention the similar gearing was 5.4, it felt very overgeared. I ran a spool so probably didnt carry as much corner speed as the one way you guys ran.

Just thought I'd let people know, that Mr K and I ran at WLRC at the weekend on VTEC 27R tyres in prep for the KO, and ran the BTCC set up on the car! Car handled very well, and barley changed a thing. Tried stiffer springs, made the car push more, but kept it flatter! Also tried roll bars, but as the weather was a tad on the changable side we need to re-try some of the set up changes again when the weather is a little more consistent! But the BTCC WLRC set up on Sorex's is a very good starting point for runing on VTEC's at WLRC.

Hi Chris could you give me a starter point set up for the phi on carpet please, med grip carpet
with thanks Ben Mather
Chris Kerswell
01-10-2007, 10:31 PM
Hi Ben,
This could be tricky as I don't think anyone has run the Phi on carpet yet! Possibly Rob Fox might have done?
I guess the best bet might be to keep an eye on the Corally website to see if Marc Fischer posts his Vegas setup from yesterday.
Alternatively watch this space after Oct 14th when we will be running at the first Carpet Wars round.

I've run the car on carpet a couple of times in 5cell mod and its been very good, i'm basically using the kit setup but with the roll centres raised (dots up allround) i'll ask Chris Delves to post the setup sheet tomorrow for me as i can't.

Hi all... here is Adam Smith's 27turn set up for Ipswich... with which he dominated and set a new track record and won the meeting! Hope its of use to some ppl out there!
Hi Guys
I have been looking at the outdoor setups and notice that a lot of them have shocks with zero rebound. What’s the point of having your shocks like that and how do you build them like it?
Thanks
Tony
Chris Delves
14-03-2008, 10:11 AM
Hi Tony... my reason for runing the Corally Shocks without rebound is so that the shock absorber does the job of just damping and so that when you ride a curbe/track marking the shock doesnt have that resistance to push off of it. I now run my shocks with around 3mm of rebound, but if I touch any track markings the car is more likley to flip. There are a few other reasons for doing it, but those are my main ones.
Hi Chris
Thanks for explaining that.
Do you just have the shock shaft fully in to getr zero rebound?
Thanks
Chris Delves
17-03-2008, 09:36 AM
When you first building the shock, push the shock shaft all the way in and see if it pushes it out. Last year I ran zero re-bound, so after using the shock shaft in it would stay in position and not return; but I have been running 2mm of re-bound, so after pushing the shock shaft in it is pushed back out by 2mm. Hope that helps explin a few things.

Hi Guy, I have recently purchased a couple of Phi kits with the intention of having one setup for dry weather and one for the cold/damp/wet conditions. Thanks to both Chris's for all the other setup's, ive now got a good idea what to run in the dry.
Due to the english weather mainly being rubbish with plenty of wet weather:'( has anyone got any other setups/ideas as to what else i can run with for a wet setup other than probably softening the shocks and raising the ride hight a bit?
thanks

30-03-2008, 07:16 PM
Ran in the wet today at the Southend round of the STCC, despite finishing dead last for not being able to finish a race for various reasons my car was pretty good. The only changes that were made from dry to wet were putting the softest springs on as you mentioned, but i also changed from 6 deg castor blocks to 4 deg to give a bit more of power steering as i like my car to push through corners a bit. Other than that the only other thing you could do depending on how aggressive you are with your throttle thumb is poss turn your punch settings down a bit. Hope this helps a bit

One of the tricks that I do in the wet is to remove all droop from the car, but this means your shock lengths have to be the same as then the droop is determined by shock length. Taking all the droop out seems to make the car stable in the wet, but it can make it push... something you just have to play with, but thats one of the things I do normally in the wet. :)

Hi there Andy,
I cant see what class you are running, but somewhere there is my Stock setup on here, or if not, I can email it to you.
I would have TQed Stock if it wasnt for some bad interferance on the day, so it is a decent setup.

Thanks for the reply, I'm running 10.5 TC2, so the set up should be fairly similar depending on driving styles. I'll have a look and see if i can find it, if not if you could send it to me that wouuld be good cheers mate :D

Hi Andy. The set up Chris and I ran at Eastbourn last year was fairly hard to drive! If I remember rightly we ran some funny angels on the wishbones, which helped to carry lots of corner speed, but you had to be on top of the car the whole time! So if you do run it and find it hard to drive try running flat pins... hope it goes well for ya chap.

mind you at southend last weekend you helped me wiv the caster blocks to make my car amazing it was the best my car has ever been at that place. so cheers for that but i will be their saturday before the meeting so we can have a look then. i remember last year at the stcc my car being on edge but was quicker that way at eastbourne!

There ya go Andy... lots of people on tap to help. Mark is right though, I remember when Chris and I were at Eastbourn last year the second the car was easy to drive it was slow... that kinda goes for any track... an edgy car will always be faster than a safe car, but I think it was particularly noticeable round there! Thanks for offering your help Mark :)

Cheers guys, glad your car was good at Southend Mark, its nice to see the corallys going well. Even if most of us did have a pretty crappy day lol!!!
I know exactly what you mean Chris i like my car positive anyway, something the corally is very good at.
Thanks again guys, see you at Eastbourne Mark and i hope all goes well for you guys at Aldershot:D

What chassis comes as standard cant find in in the manual anywhere. Is it 2.4 or 2.9. If it is 2.4 what difference would 2.9 make. Im assuming that would just make it less reactive in the corners.
Chris Delves
28-04-2008, 12:23 PM
I believe that it is the 2.4mm chassis that comes with the kit. Thinner chassis helps to generate more tracion, and also allows the weight transfere to happen more quickly across the car! Bit more prone to tweaking though! Generally I use 2.4 for outdoors and 2.9 for indoor tracks.

29-04-2008, 04:44 PM
just had a look at the box it says 2.9 so will probably just get the same

Hi Guys,
Here is the setup I ran at Yateley today. It's a small, twisty, low grip track. This setup made the car pretty safe and stable.
Although I ran Mod, I'm pretty sure this will work well for Pro-Stock too!
