How well do Mini-Z F1 cars work on ordinary carpet? Can I race them round the living room, or does the surface need to be completely totally flat?

This all depends on what 'pile' carpet you have? If it is quite thick then I think you will have problems with understeer one minute and versteer the next. Wood or kitchen tiles is what I would recommend.
Hope this helps.

We race on carpet at our local track in a leisure centre, the F1's cope better with carpet than tourers, due to their wider wheels.
The carpet we race on it like office carpet, with a low pile.
However at speed the direction of the pile can affect how the miniz handles. The pile will make the car wander.
The best carpet is probably the stuff 1/10th's race on.
On slightly thicker carpets, like you would have at home, the cars can either wander badly and slow the car down greatly.
