I put my TC3 FT together simply following the instructions with no problems at all. Just take your time and make sure you dont overtighten any of the screws - especially in the gear casings, and don't overtighten the diff bolt, as it will snap if overtightened.
If you want to make the car run as smooth as possible, it would be worthwhile removing the lube from all the bearings and using a lightweight oil instead - everthing runs a lot freer.

Blast grease out your bearings, put thinner oil in ... Take one side seal out of bearings on hubs and in diff.
in this format (sorry about my text drawging)
[| ] [ |] Seals on outer bit... ALthough thats a tip for every car I suppose ::)

I find that my tc3 frees up a lot just by running it in. This can be done either just by running on the track, or using a 2 cell battery connected to an old motor, but works best with all the wheels removed apparently.

leave one of the o rings out of the drive cups for the Prop shaft.
I run no bearing shields at all, clean and lube regularly
Get the centre chassis brace milled!
On the diff housings dont tighten the screws just take up the slack
