At West London, Steve Cann stated during the drivers briefing that it was now a BRCA requirement that marshalls could not wear flip flops or open toe sandals. I've tried to find this ruling on the BRCA website to see if we need to make any changes to our club rules but can't find anything.
Will this rule be enforced this weekend at Snetterton, and if so can someone please point me to the official text?
Thanks,
Colin

Colin,
I think this falls into the category of "common sense" - flip flops offer no protection from a car whacking your foot nor can you run / move quickly in them.
Sort of like the "rule" that you waterproof your car if running in the rain...

Colin, as Dave has written, use a bit of common sense, this is a health and safety thing. If you want to wear the aforementioned footware please come along to race control so I can smash a couple of toes with my club hammer, just to let you know what it might feel like to be hit by a car whilst wearing them.

from what Steve said i think it was a subject discussed at one of their meetings
don't think it was anything written down
but as has been said its common sense really
but then I've not quite got to the sandal stage yet,so dont feel the need :D
I had a car hit me with trainers on, it hurt...quite a bit, now imagine you had on sandles or 'flip-flops'...in my crystal ball I see an ambulance and your visit to the local NHS centre where you will likely sit in a cubicle (if you are lucky) for hours before a trainee comes and bandages your foot and most of your leg up, giving you a dose of MRSA to boot.

In my crystal ball (aka BBC Weather) I see the needs for welly boots, not sandals! :'(

i think TBh this is an excellent move, as at the rallycross meeting i goto have seen people marshalling in trainers which offer no protection to a 3kg 50mph weapon hitting ur foot.

Tim, you can stop that foul language now :D It also says temps up to 23°C and maybe showers.

I know, I know, and I am trying to be positive :) :)
But all the forecasts..... the rain....... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't care 'cos I'll be there all waterproofed and blue tacked up! Nothing stops me going racing. :)
crap, not looking ideal is it. Where is that bluetack

Thanks, I appreciate that the "coomon sense" response was going to come, but I was trying to get at whether or not this was an official BRCA rule, as I took from the driver briefing that if you were wearing sandals (let's just put aside flip flops as they are clearly silly), then you would not be allowed to marshall, if you didn't marshall you lost your times, ergo, no point in racing if you happened to turn up in sandals with no trainers!
And no, I wasn't wearing sandals on the day, but I have been known to in the past. Although, to be honest I've been hit by cars when marshalling and it's generally not my foot which suffers, but my ankles, which trainers aren't going to help anyway.

it may not be an official rule but im pretty sure the saftey officer (responsible for health and saftey) will have powers to say they can not be worn, i know our sections officer can, as if he feels he can stop a meeting on saftey grounds, and thats not in the book.
Why is it it has to be in the book or we wont play?
as has been said its common sense!

Hello All
General rules (handbook pages 12/13) :-
5, first sentence. (also see Constitution Point 9 second sentence)
7, drivers briefing points 5 & 6. (Explaniation of any local rules / marshalling requirements)
If you're looking for something that you could use to cover it.
Though why you should be looking for a specific 'rule' to cover anybody doing anything so amazingly stupid is beyond me.
PS Mark, your Safety Officers potential action falls under General Rule 5 too.

Just moved thread to a more relevant forum.

OK, thanks Jim, I now understand that it was a local interpretation of the rules.
Mark, it may be common sense, but if it is not written anywhere, then it will not be universally applied - for example I wonder if it would have formed part of the driver briefing at Snetterton if Jon hadn't been reading this thread?
Anyway, I'm not going to debate the right's and wrong's of this, I have my answer and it wasn't my original intention to debate the issue.

The 'no flip flops' thing is definitely a 10th Offroad Rule (not sure about in general)... probably triggered by me and my love for flip flops from last year! Now mentioned at almost every national Drivers' Briefing... completely with Emily Shoe Check!
