Hi guys ;D

I am new to RC and will join a club next year. I have bought a Yokomo MR4-TC custom and need to assemble it. Although I haven't started to assemble it yet, I would like to ask the experts (you ;D ) what they think would be a good package in terms of electrics for this particular chassis.

What I would like to do, is to start RC in a club and learn to drive the car correctly. So I am not looking for the ultimate power but for a fairly good smooth package. I am looking for a package competitive at club level... once I am able to not bump into walls I will think mounting an upgrade to my MR4 TC ..

What do you think I should use ?
On one review last year the reviewer was using

■ Futaba Attack transmitter
■ Futaba S3003 steering servo
■ Futaba FP-R 112J 27mHz receiver
■ Novak Elecktra speed controller
■ Reedy Rage stock motor
■ SMC Enduro Maxx NiMH battery pack

on another one : (with special mention to the engine fitting perfectly)

Novak Fusion Speedo
Novak XL Rx
Reedy Fury 12x2 Motor
Reedy MVP Stock Motor
Reedy Extreme Sanyo 3000HV Cells

Thank you for your help

Cheers

Sandy

Well, first of all, don't pay too much attention to what the magazines (particularly Racer) run in the cars - they just throw in whatever is sitting around in the office, or whatever the distributor sends them.

First thing to check is what rules your club races to - stock, modified or maybe something else, like spec, and buy the motor to suit. Stock is best for a beginner, and there are lots of good motors out there (£27.50 for a stock, more for a mod). All car motors fit in the Yokomo.

Futaba Attack radio gear is the best budget buy - the transmitter, receiver and servo all come together.

Novak is a good brand of speed controller, the Electra is a budget forward-only model, and a beginner would be better off with reverse. Fuson is also forward only (I think). Novak's explorer fits the bill for stock motors, but other good makes are Nosram, LRP, GM and Futaba. With a speedo, you need to have a turn limit rating at or below the motor you are running - almost every speedo will run a stock.

Cells - 3000's are old tech now - the latest NiMH cells are 3300's, GP brand are better, and also great value, but for club stock racing a 2000 or 2400 NiCd's are still worth considering. NiMH's need a different charge routine to NiCd's, but almost every new charger you buy now is NiMH safe - not always the case with older chargers.

Chargers - must be peak detect - fully adjustable is great, but the cheapest with that function is about £80. You can get a competent charger for £30-£40 though, e.g. Ripmax Pro-Peak 2500VP.
