Hello

Wow, do I feel like I have bitten of more than I can chew.

I got my Dark Impact today, the website I ordered from said all the extras I needed were a Radio control with servo, 7.2V battery and charger, all of which I have already.

So this weekend was put aside for the build.

I open the box and yes, the kit comes with a 540 motor, but oooooh no, no speed controller.

Back on the website and I am presented with loads of choices, different sizes, features etc. Now I know I want one with reverse, but many of them say about motor turn limits. Some say ?? motor turn limit (so I guess this means I need the motor to be under this number), others say motor limit over ?? turns (so I guess my motor needs to be more than the specified number). Please help me....

Considered so far: LRP A.I. Automatic Runner Reverse, LRP A.I. Automatic Super Reverse, Nosram Hawk Power Reverse, Nosram Magnum Reverse.

So I guess what I am asking here is, what would be suitable for the 540 motor supplied?

Plus any recommendations (£50 or under if poss)?

Any esc will handle a 540 motor which is in excess of 27 turns. To put it plainly (and I am sure others will be more technical) the less turns (winds) on a motor the quicker it is and you need a more expensive esc to handle a quicker motor. What you need to be thinking is what wind motor will I get when I have decided the 540 is too slow. If you are planning to race outdoors competitively in the future you will find that most of the competition will be using 10 turn motors.
If your near Deal, Kent you might want to come down to the south east regional this sunday and pick our brains and see what we are using.

Have a look at the Mtronics Eco range, I think the Eco20 (for motors over 20 turns) would be a good starting point for you. It will handle the 540 with ease, and also a good stock 27 turn (which i think would be a good motor to step up to).

The cost is very low, and if one day you did want a faster motor then you can then consider the expensive ESC's to replace the Eco too but you may be far from doing that.

Err, Chris...

Do Tekin not do a starter speedo?

Why not an LRP A1 auto pro reverse. 11 turn limit, reverse and under £50. Not a model I have used but my lrp runner is still one that I use a lot when club racing.

take a look on some of the better known auction sites and you can pick up a really decent speedo for very cheap.... for example... the novak gtx.. retail price anything from £120 upwards.. i went onto a well known auction site.. £60... ok so it was second hand, but it was in mint condition!!! and lots of other speedo's can be picked up cheaply too... pm if you want some more info :)

They have a few speedcontrols, but none in the price range.

i have a Xtra-No Limit Digital Speed Controller from ripmax. no limit to the turn and from memory was about £50.

its small, has ABS braking (:) ) reverse delay as well as lockout and other odds.

not used it for racing but when i was looking it was reccomended as being good quality and cheap.

I am looking at getting a 1/10th scale buggy, haven't had a go with one since the Original Grasshopper came out all those years ago.

What is the Dark Impact like?? I want something that is good fun but with potential to race. I read somewhere that they were quite good.

I have never raced in any category before, but it is something I want to do in the future.

Any advice anyone??
