Hello,
I have picked up a 2nd hand lightning 2 pro, ran it for first time last weekend at KMRC (http://www.kmrc.co.uk/)
any one got any special setup tips or advice?
am using an RBS5 engine 063 pipe, thunder tiger ds1015 & ds1211 servo's.
i was generally getting round the track ok but was a good few seconds off the pace. i was using crimefighters, should have angle spikes and turbo rats available next time. i esp found i had a lot of power on understeer, the ramps gave me a bit of grief everynow and then. i felt short of grip but grip rolled aswell
look forward to doing it all over again! :)

Hi, I have been told that the main problem with the Lightning is flexy wishbones. The best way around this is to keep the shocks light and play with the anti roll bars and droop to find a setup that suits the particular track. :D

i see what you mean!

several mm's of flex on front and about 3x as much rear!

sounds like a useable exuse for soggy handling / bad driving ;)

Hi Phil,

The Lightning Pro is an excellent car for the price, its as tough as old boots and when set up correctly its a quick car. The one area that the car needs a little bit of work is the diffs, they are mechanically too stiff with the standard O'rings fitted. Kyosho O'rings are better (slightly smaller outside diameter) but also I would recommend using light diff oils. If you try 2,000 grade silicon oil in the front ,middle and rear gearboxes you will find the car much easier to drive. Neil's suspension set up looks fine but I think the diffs need work. We've run this car for 2 years now and as far as I can remember it has never broken. Also I've never heard of any problems with soft suspension arms, the car handles rough tracks just as well as it does on smooth ones.
Because its cheap people think its inferior but thats not the case its just excellent value for money!!

Dave,
Was that your car in the A- final at the pro-line? driven by Justin.

WELL DONE!

I guess that proves there is nothing wrong with the car ;)

at KMRC Sunday, I changed shock oil from 30wt to 60 f/ 50 r, and went to turbo rats. angle spikes were wicked!
the bends were quite good and some of the shorter straights awesome but the main straight was a nightmare, i rarely managed to find a clean line that didn't throw the car up or send it cartwheeling  it just couldn't handle the bumps at full power

i am not sure what pistons i have in there at the moment, my springs are blue but again i am not sure what poundage, didn't get a chance to move shocks, they were rears 3rd hole in from top on tower and outer on arm, front was middle lower on tower, outer on arm. i made sure i took out the positive camber at front this time :o , rear arm mount is 56mm, ride height about 19mm front, 25mm rear. didn't touch diffs either, but i have some spare ones so i will have a look.
What brand of diff oil/ shock oil do you recommend?

I also ran at the mercc (http://www.mercc.co.uk/) yesterday, the grass was nice and flat with a few jumps. as no bumps, the car was great! i won every heat but got pipped to 2nd in the final after a couple of tie-ups with back markers :'(
the track is a little bit tight for 1/8th, in fact a couple of the 4wd elec's were faster than me

Maybe you can post your pro-line setup for us?

Thanks to all for support so far, i really look forward to getting the car sorted.
cheers

Hi Phil,
Here is our latest set-up, but first a few tips. As I stated earlier the diffs make a tremendous difference in the way the car handles, use Kyosho seals and light oils. We use Xray oil in both the diffs and the shocks.
The shocks also need a little work to make them better, we use Kyosho parts (again) they only cost a few pounds and its well worth it. We have fitted Kyosho pistons with 2 X 1.4mm holes and their diaphrams as well. The pistons fit better and the diaphrams are made of a softer rubber. Kyosho blue spring work well but I'm told that Hyper blue springs are very simular.
At Harper Adams Justin used a 13T clutch bell because of the nature of the track but normally he would use a 14T. I hope this helps and good luck with the car.

Front Shocks Pistons 2 x 1.4mm
Oil 400
Springs Kyosho Blue
Position - shock tower Top Middle
Position - Susp Arm Inner

Rear Shocks Pistons 2 X 1.4mm
