Hello people,How are you!
What is the secret to get i really free drive train?
Ive just Put new diffs in my TC3,I shown it to Glyn W,and he said the drive train is'nt very free..Also there is a lot of back lash in the gears. He said i need to use some shims etc,but i don't know really how to get rid of the back lash?-do i take shim off the long out drive and put it on the small out drive, or have one on both small & long outdrive.or is it important to always have a shim on the long out drive as per manul ?or do i stop back lash by putting shims on the pinion drive some-how. ???

Has you can see im a bit confused, :-
If some one would care to tell me the correct way to get rid of the back lash,it would be Very much appreciated,
Thanks
steve

To reduce backlash with the bevel gears in the gearbox, you need to place the shims (quite thin) onto the short end of the diff, but before the bearing, I believe. This should reduce the backlash by shifting the diff bevel gear over slightly towards the smaller pinion bevel gear that attaches to the propshaft. This meshes the gears closer together and a tighter feel to the gears should be more apparent. You can check this by holding one of the gears and 'rocking' the other one back and forth. There should be a small amount of backlash (i.e. not crammed together). Keep adding shims until the backlash is removed, but stop before the gears get crammed together.

As for your car being free, check all the bearings, the wheel bearings take a fair hammering, because they are open to the elements more(dust and dirt). Give them all a rinse through with motor cleaner and replace any that are seized. Once dry, lube them with a light bearing oil (you only need a drop). I use some dead old lube i bought ages ago that hasnt run out yet.

Hope this helps

Mark. P.S. If all else fails, read the instructions!

On each end of the drive shaft, in the cups, there is an orange seal in each one, take one of these out,

Makes a big difference!

Also, when you put the bearings into place, make sure thery have a smooth action.

I put a new front hub on yesterday, and the hole must be oval so it makes the bearing feel rough!

Take a file and take the inside edge off untill it feels smoth again.

I also run no shields and dry bearings for nationals, and just the outer shield with a light oil for club racing

I recently built a new tc3 FT,

I took all the bearings out of the box, took the teflon shields of, degreased them and lightly oiled them. Build the car and put a slow motor in. I hooked the motor to a 4.8v supply and let it spin over night. Car was unbelievable!! It ran further than any other car I've had.

I always find with a new set of gears it runs tight, so the last post made was probably to do with the gears running in....

I just built up a new set of diffs and decided to have new gears, the car is just so tight running...

Also theres an error on the new white gears, PM me for more details. May make a post even its a pretty big problem!
