View Full Version : weakness of the SD

I bought my SD about 5 weeks ago. After racing it for the first two i thought it was great, no problems at all.

But after that i found that i was breaking 2, 3, or 4 parts every nite. After only just slightly clipping a corner most of the time.

This week i have noticed that one of the driveshafts was slightly bent. And also that the uj was binding and the movement wasnt free. i have now swapped the shafts of the front and rear uj's to see if it'll make a difference.

has any one else had any troubles with this?

Does anyone recomend alloy wishbones, uprights etc?

thanx, Caster

My drive shafts were tight when i first built them and when turning the dogbone by hand the stub axle would not drop under there own weight so i used a fine grade of sand paper and spun the cupler between my fingers and sand paper until i had it to the right size to let the driveshafts work correctly. Be warned if you do this as you may need to rebuild them more often as it removes the protective finish that helps it stop rusting after racing in the wet.

Other than that i have only broken a few wishbones which do seem more prone to breaking as before i got the SD i have broken maybe one wishbone in 6 years with all the other cars i have run.

I'a afraid wishbones are a little iffy on both the SD and the previous models (I always carry 2 or 3 packs in the box).
My opinion ongoing to alloy is that I wouldn't for 2 reasons.
1. When in an impact the stress has got to go somewhere and if the wishbone won;t break then the impact is going to go inboard on your car and I wounld rather buy wishbones than bulkheads.
2. On impact the wishbones may bend which is ok if you are good, and check your alignment after every run but I'm afraid I am a lazy git so I know that I would not pick up a bent wishbone for days so I would be cursing "why is this car not handling";)

I agree with you Mark the alloy wishbones on the sd or any car i wouldnt use because they could bend and they wouldnt brake

i have never broke a wishbone on my sd only thing i have broke is the hub carrier and that was only a split in it not actually broke.

You will break C-Hubs (and also the steering blocks) if you loose one king pin. I recommend going either to the Suzuki aluminium ones or the new graphite ones.

About the arms, I broke several ones outdoors when having crashes at high speed. Since I actually run indoors, I didn't broke any (I use the new graphite ones since 2 weeks no pb for the moment).

Other parts seems to be ok. Oh, the hinge pins bends on big crashes so check them quite often.

My sd had a really bad glitch problem, I used 2 pieces of servo tape on the receiver and the esc but it was still glitching..The only thing i broke was a A-arm but when they glitch, what do you do huh..This has been a problem at my track with this car.

Hi and welcome gti,
May be worth you posting this as a seperate question to get the most ideas.

Could you also please fill in your profile as per rule 5, Thanks

I found the SD is a bit more prone to glitches than my other, plastic chassis cars.

Try running an extra set of capacitors on the motor - in my opinion, this is an absolute necessity on the Trinity monster stock, because the standard capacitor board is next to useless.

I also run the receiver on the top deck, rather than tyring to cram it on to the lower deck.

Think we have gone a little off topic, Dunno how u guys keep breaking your machines havent broken a thing and I have tried. On the glitching side cant report any probs on that and I run the receiver and speedo side by side. However have seen some people mounting on the servo

Hi all,

I have raced my SD a few times now and even with me driving like a complete idiot at Stafford last Sunday i have not broken anything on it at all yet. With my old tc3 i only had to switch it on and something broke. I am however after reading this thread going to switch to graphite wishbones and keep the standard ones as spares.
