Anyone else got a Losi XXX-S (read:- brick) that weighs too much???
I have already put FMax titanium screws in and Ratzas Carbon Shocktowers, and I have my new project, a lexan belt cover, you know that piece that runs under the centre of the car? I have worked it out and you save a fair few grams, all you need is some lexan cutoffs from your new bodyshell. Should be getting nearer to 1550 grams and should look the dog danglies when done!
Anyone else done something similiar??? Infact, anyone else got a brick of a XXX-S?

Check out the chassis milling thread to see what I did to another brick! I will aslo be making him a CF belt cover and shock towers.
<edit - you have already been there :-[ >

Andy:- Mine's a plastic one
Marcus:- seen what you did, very tidy job! I have seen a silver carbon fibre belt cover made by fibrelyte but apparently it didn't fit and it seemed as if it was made out of tinfoil :-

I made some sample belt covers out of fibreglass, they weigh 7 grammes. PM me if you want one.

I have fitted one of Marcus's fiberglass belt covers, and although I am taking weight of in the wrong place it is half the weight of the graphite one. ;D and its a far better fit then the kit one. well done Marcus.
as for that in tarmac trim my car weights in at around the 1750gm mark, with stcc tyre, rims, and inserts, and 3300'w thats with at least 25gm of balancing weight as well. but indoors on new foams the car is 1510-1500gm's depending on the foam size. Thats still with the 25gm's of balancing weight.

thought mine was a brick at the ko, until i relaised i still had 30g or lead on it from last years indoor season when we were running 2400's..... d'oh. dont need to be too clever to push an airbrush around it turns out..... :-[
car was 1515 after i think... remember it wasn't far off spot on. thats pretty much std, with a VERY light bodyshell (makes a big difference how they're painted, and from a very high part of the car ;) )

hey my car up in lights :D
hats off it was a great job, and everything seems to fit nice and snug.
the extra weight loss on the belt cover and shock towers will balance out the plastic-graphite chassis very well in deed.
just need some talent and i'm there ;D

just remember you will never have to worry aboutfailing scruteneering when you forget to check the weight!

Muahahaha, yrht he 33's are heavier, but i put some of the LRP ones in, second generaltion off a so called sponcered driver and it only went to 1477, with transponder! 8)
I have a few red ali bits, ie. Steering bracket, motor clamp, knuckles/spindlers, red ali hex's that clamp, shock bushings, the shock adjusters. i did try and run a laminated piece of plastic as the belt tunnel undertray ???
I have nosram speedo *dominator power* KO reciever, the small one ??? KO 2113 servo with plastic gears, think thats about everything.

It's those G+ cars! There well underweight! Actually i've fitted a fan to my car now, behind the motor, only weighs about 3g so it's not a huge loss.

why behind? when your going forwards the bit of air that comes up through the bottom of the motor hole will make the fan struggle and will not allow it to perform at all, thats why i took mine off :-

I'm just copying JJ's fan setup. His seems to work okay , I think.

teehee! he won't like that! Anyway, i'm gonna strip the anodising off all the blue bits on my car so it's silver, a little more individual than the usual blue/red/purple

In my view the idea of having a fan behind the motor is because (as said from a friend who used to work at Lotus cars) the way to get rid of heat is to duct or blow the air away and not to blow or duct air on the the object in question, as the you will only be heating the air up when it arrives at the object in question rather than getting rid of the all ready hot air. hope this Makes sense. :-

Certainly with a heatsink and fan it is much more efficient if the fan sucks the air through the vanes of the heatsink rather than blowing through them. In the car, a fan mounted behind the motor sucking the heat from the motor and blowing it out the rear will not only augment the airflow from the hole in the bottom, but will also be the most efficient way of extracting the heat from the motor.

If you polish the alloy bits up, get som eAuto solvol (metal polish) and use it after buffing, then, clean and coat with a couple of layers of car laquer, if you don't the alloy will dull (corrode, same as Anodising, but uncontrolled and not very pretty). If you have ever owned a motorbike and decided to polish alloy parts on it, you will know what I mean.
Cooling: they used to produce motors with, on the top of each stack, the last layer of metal was bent up, creating a small fan and airflow. The problem with putting a fan at the rear of the motor, is it is indiscriminate in where it sucks its air from, so you really would need a shroud, but you are not really getting the airflow over where you need it, the brushes and comm.
Here is one idea, mount a fan at the fron of the car, where it is cool air, create a funnel at the rear, forcing the air into a tube (fuel hose for instance), due to volume and physics (Venturi), you should get a nice little blast of air from it, which you could direct right to the place of the heat....

all of this seems a bit much to do, why not just get the right gearing so it runs cool anyway :P

cud be shell, more paint on, this would make a difference, is it the plastic one as mine is the G+ and is going to be lighter anyways
Luke Hobson
25-09-2003, 04:44 PM
no its the graphite+
the shell doesn't have that much paint (not becuase of a simple design, just bad driving ;))
just can't figure it.
unless it s the esc?

if you run rubber tyres then it will be heavier than a foam spec G+. Although that still seems quite heavy! Especially when my normal XXXS weighs that much, and thats with pretty much identical equipment.
Cut down on the wiring, get a top airbrush paintjob (hey! theres a plug for someone!) that should be lighter.
