OK, I admit, I've lost the plot here a bit - I have a sticker on my motor which goes from -24 to +12 (I assume degrees, but could be mm) but I've forgotton which side of 0 I should be. In other words should I be running advanced (+) or retarded (-) ?

Advance, advance, advance :D

Perplexing that you have a scale that goes to -24 !!!!!!

Mike,

sure does, on my Fantom!

So, if I'm holding the motor in my left hand with the pinion aiming at my belly, the timing ring screw on the endbell is just right of 0 (this is for 1/12th, so I'm only looking for a couple of degrees)

Sounds right.

If you confused by you sticker, each notch in the end bell is 12deg, so the notch under the timing screw is 0, then so on.

Dave, is it a new ish Fantom (say last 4 years)??

If so then there is a bit missing from your skicker!! I have a few sitting here and they all go -24 - +24. For 12th scale i was running +12 last week - which is as andrew says one notch on the endbell.
