i know this has been discussed before, I also think my quest is in vain but before I give up completely, has anybody or does anyone know of anybody who has sucessfully fitted Tamiya TRF shocks to an xray? I have heard rumours about it being done so that the ride height and droop can be maintained so I hope that it is possible because although I can build the xray ones okay, there still rubbish compared to the TRF shocks so, I just think, if you dont ask..................

I run mine with TRF shocks. I have all the ride height adjustment I need, but droop adjustment is still limited. (This is not an issue for me as I only use it at one track)
I use a combination of TRF/XRay/AE and Mugen (I think) parts. TRF Shocks and shafts, XRay springs and collars, modified longer Mugen ball ends as a lower mount and AE TC3 front hub top hat washers through the TRF upper shock mounting points and a 3.00mm screw/locknut straight onto the shock tower.
You can get the droop adjustment through a greater scale by using longer shafts.

Sounds like a lot of effort! Are your laptimes any better?

I have been running TRF shocks on my FK04 and FK05, the droop and ride height are not limited.
I use a set of shock towers made by a friend of mine, PM me for contact details. He is just getting a bunch of them made so they will be available soon.

Dunno, I never ran it with XRay shocks :D It was a lot of bother, but, no matter how many times I tried, I could'nt get the XRay shocks as smooth.

TRF shocks make you car handle Ok Rob, shame they don't improve the motor reliability :D
5 mins is such a long time.

i have been using the trf shocks on my bmi-tc3 with great sucess, discard the mounts that come with the kit and use the yokomo alloy mounts which allow easy removal .

xray shocks are serpent and a dodle to build and set up taken from some one elses post
1) when I've cut all the plastic bits, I make sure all the flashings are trimmed off.
2) assemble the pistons and then double check again that there are no further bits sticking out
3) get the small o-rings greased up and then place them in the bottom cap and assemble onto shock body
4) with the pistons on the shock shaft, push it through into the shock body and bottom cap, slowly. Now I push them up and down and ensure that all 4 sets are able to move smoothly. this is also a good time to check that the keyed step changes for number of holes work
5) thread the end lugs (for the ball links)
6) put them on a shock stand and fill them up 2/4 of the way and push the pistons up and down until I get most of the bubbles out. Again, here I double check that the number of holes are the same by checking and using the step/key function of the shock. Its easy to do this now because you can actually see where the oil rushed through the holes. Also, you can "feel" the resistance of the oil and therefore know you have the holes right.
7) back onto the stand and pour oil to full
8 ) after an hour or two, I check for tiny air bubbles if any. If not, I proceed as per manual
9) Here is where a lot of people differ, when putting on the top cap, some people like to put as much oil as possible to get max rebound. I prefer so assemble so that my shock shafts rebound about half way after you push them in.
10) Complete the rest of the shocks as per manual and then I leave them overnight on the stand again. In the morning I check again for rebound. There will be minimal leakage but there may be some as pressure equalise and things settle. I then use one of those gold pens to label the bottom spring cup what oil I've used in the shocks - I have to, I have 5 sets of shock absorbers between the two cars.
That's it! (If you are D, he will now probably use his Losi shock tool to check for exactly matching but because you are not D, you should do your best to eyeball the rebounds, check the lengths and also the functioning of the steps/keys)

Thanks for all your help guys, tbh, I didn't really think that I would be able to use the TRF shocks, but it seems I may have been wrong :D . Hopefully the required parts will arrive in the next couple of weeks and I'll be to try them out.
I have read so many posts about how to make the Xray shocks work and I dont have a problem building them, perhaps thats because they need so much maintenance due to the iffy quality whereas the TRF shocks are of a much better build quality. So, why is it that the Xray, arguably the best quality car in the rc world stick a set of shocks that simply dont match the rest of the package

Beacause nobody builds better shocks than the TRF ones. TC3 threaded are OK-ish, Xray ones stink!
Both our T1FKs have TRFs.

ok i see now
i usualy have 2 sets of shocks i use one set for wood and one set for outdoor/carpet to save me changing oil all the time but they do come in handy as spares too i suppose.
i have never done a shock seal in a year and a half of racing the 415 (lets hope it stays this way lol)

Just Finished fitting Tamiya shocks to the 05, using all tamiya parts ;)
Used the long shock end but cut 3mm of material off of the top of the shock end, the amount of droop is now much better. still not right but better than Xray ones for sure :D
