I was just wondering how many of you out there have any special tips on preparing or maintaining a stock V12 type motor, either the kit or mabuchi type.
I know some people run them in slowly first, dip them in soapy water, polish the armature etc and some (myself included) just sling them in the car and go.
I would be interested to see how many ways there are of getting the most performance out of the stock motor.
ps: if you have a secret but legal technique I promise I won't tell anyone else. :D
Thanks

i usually just throw a motor in my car too.
But to get the best out of your motor for a thats not run in try running it backwards and add some comm drops. helps a little. ;) abrasive comm drops works best

Put it in the car and race!
I usually clean between runs if I can be bothered. I do this by squirting motor spray on a cotton bud, pressing this on the comm, and turning the back wheels slowly. I do this with about 5 or 6 cottn bud ends, and then switch to dry cotton buds to remove residue. I also use a sharp implement to remove the crap from between the comm segments.
After this, I use comm drops, oil the bushings and go. :D

I just stick the motor in....
I do however clean the comm as often as possible...
Before a meeting...(Usually at home)
I use Brake cleaner to clean out the muck...
then a comm stick to polish the comm
then cotton buds dipped in brake cleaner to clean out any remaining muck
finally put a drop or 2 of comm drops and some oil on the bushes...
then between races
then cotton buds dipped in brake cleaner to clean out any remaining muck
then put a drop or 2 of comm drops and some oil on the bushes...
Not only does this keep the motor high revving, it uses less battery power.. and the motor lasts loads longer.... (I can get the brushes to totally wear away - or melt as I did at March :) )

:D many thanks to the help received recently at the local Mardave club meeting where I was shown a few tweaks by Mr Innis, basically the use of a comm cleaner stick and tweak on the gearing and some new rear V53's and we were off to a flier.
Improved my PB from struggling to maintain 80's and now a new PB of 87 not bad when the club lap record is 89. car goes great now as well as the new Mardave Audi TT body which handles and looks brilliant.
have just ordered a comm stick. many thanks :D

if you dont want to use loads of cotton buds it works just as well using a dab of tcut then turning motor (do this a couple of times) then you only need one or two cotton buds to remove the residue i have been trying this it seems to work just as well and you dont get cotton wool in your motor as much.
