Im running a mission with a 3000 battery pack and a RC-line RF-10 ESC and a Peak jaguar 17x2 motor, but every time i connect the battery and run it the motor wire become red hot and smoke pours out of it :o

What is wrong with it .. :'(

Thanks Dan

First thing I got to ask, did this just happen, or has it been slowly getting worse?

Dan,

Can you clarify where the smoke is coming from. Is it the speed controller or the motor?

As the wire is getting hot, it indicates there is a lot of current drain.
This can be caused by a number of things. The things I would check first are:
1. Remove pinion from motor and see if the drive train is free ( with a gentle push the car rolls forward with no jerkiness or sudden stoppage)
2. Ensure that the pinion and spur are meshed correctly - not to tight.

If all this is ok, then start looking at the motor and ESC.

When was the motor cleaned and new brushes fitted?
Is there any visible sign of the +ve and -ve wires from the ESC to the motor touching, anywhere in between or even at the motor or ESC?

My initial thoughts are the motor is causing the problem, clean and re-brush it then test again. If you still have the same problem, try a different motor. If you still have a problem then start looking at the ESC.

Tim.

DA_cookie_monstA: The motor was in my fireblade first, but it didnt suit the gearing so i took it out and put it in the mission, its just starting to happen

Tim:The smoke is coming from the end bell and wires go red hot and melt the plastic covering on them, the drive train is ok free and smooth..
Ive redone the pinion meshing so its not to tight..

The motor has only been run 4 times and the brushes are hardly worn at all..!!
No the wires are nowhere near each other,i took the motor out and touched it straight to the battery so it had no strain on it at all and it still happens..!!!

Do you think its a duff motor ? The ESC is suppose to beable to take up to 12 turn and its ony a 17x2

Cheers for youtr help

When you pull the brushes out can you spin the motor easily with your fingers on the shaft?
I have had this kind of problem with bushings and bearings being out of line and causing the shaft to have a very high resistance.

Dan,

Unfortunately, it looks like a knackered motor.

The reason for the smoke and the wires getting hot appears
to be a short circuit or excessive friction between the bearing or bush and armature.
I would take the motor to someone either at your local club or model shop and ask them to have a look at it for you. It might be repairable, but I would fear the worst.

Have you got another motor to try?

Good Luck

Tim.

Mark: Just tryed it and it seems to spin ok,a little resistance coz of the magnets but nothing that bad Not sticking or anything ???

Right, now with the smoke coming out the endbell, can I suggest you take the motor out of the car, with the pinion in place, and turn the armature around, and feel for some tight spots, to me, it sounds like either the comm has gone (less likely) or, if it is a machine wound motor, the armature has thrown a wind, which is jamming the motor, causing it to over heat (quite likely) or there is debris in the motor stopping the armature turning.

Check them and come back.

Pop the armature about and check it over, and see if there is anything untoward, or, with the pinion off, hook it up and drive it with the speedo, see if it still smokes.

Tim:Well looks like another motor then ;D

DA_cookie_monstA:Done it not really any tight spots on it,yeah its machine wound jobbie,so im think that it probley has trown a wind, had it apart to check there was nothing to cause it any trouble :(

I have had it runing with a 27t stock in it and it runs fine :D

naff motor then, you could let someone who is experienced look at it, but if it is pouring smoke out, more than likely, the thing is toast.....

One last thing you can check, see if the magnets are still on tight, and not loose at all.

Right checked the magnets there ok,so i just hooked it up to the mission without a pinnion gear on it and it went red hot and smoked so i think i can safely say the motors f**ked and will have to get another

So thanks for all the help guys :) ;)

hi,
had 2 jaguar motors, 15x2 and 17x2
15 turn lasted 6 five min races the 17 finally gave up last weekend after 6 race meetings.
cheap purchase price is not always the cheapest as have a yok 17x2 which cost double has lasted over a year with just skimming
