I 've lost the original screw supplied with the XXXs kit for threading the plastic parts, is there anything special about it? Does any one know how to get a replacement? Is it necessary?

it is slightly special, I assume you mean that gold coloured one? from what I understand it is harder than the normal ones, and has a more 'self tapping' tip to it

not sure if you can buy it after market.

it might be worth buying a proper thread tap in the correct size for your screws. it would do a better job.

its not needed. but you will have a really sore hand if you try screwing everything onto your new chassis without one, I know I did when I had to do it without one, only to break it again in one of my first runs in florida ::) thank got for mini lock nuts ;D

One last note - Please complete your Profile with your full name as per Board Rules - Thanks in advance

Thanks for the reply Doughty. What is the tap size I need?

On the subject of my profile, I find the form a little confusing, I thought I had filled in everthing?

The part No you require is A-6228 5-40 x 1/8" Hardened set screw. weather you can get it as and individual item I don't know, but I would have thought you could.

Andrew, that is not the right part! :o
You have quoted the part number for grub screws (like wot hold a pinion on :P)

I'm not sure if the tapping screw is available anywhere other than in kits.

As Brian has said, the best long term option is a BoLink Torquer tap set.

Guys, it sounds like the BoLink torque tap set is the one for me, where in the UK can I order one from?

if you send the person above your reply a PM then they might be able to point you in the right direction ;)

I'n sure the special lobed gold screw should be used rather than a tap. I've assumed the following.

A tap should be used if making your own parts. Drill the size of the 'root' diameter (the bottom of the Vs) of the thread and then the tap cuts the full thread form.

The special lobed screw forms or the tread without cutting any extra material away. I assume the size of the holes in new plastic parts is approx half diameter between the vallys and the peakes of the thread, it's called the 'effective' size. the roll screw pushes some of the plasic from the peaks of the threads and puts it into the vallys on the tread, giving good strength.

If you cut the tread in one of the new plastc parts with a tap you will only get half depth of thread form as you are cutting material out rather than forming it around the screw.

If someone knows the core and effective sizes for 4/40 it would be interstig to know if the above assumption is correct.

the tapping screw will do exactly the same as a thread tap, it cuts the thread into the plastic which saves the screw having to do it.

You have a point Stu, but not if a roll tap is used.
I don't pre-tap any holes in my cars, just use good old brute force and a decent allen driver to get the screws in! :D
