could all you V12 runners post pics of your cars with the shell on and off, cheers?

also do any of lot have problems from the car over heating?

what, you mean the motor getting too hot?

This is a common problem; run a heatsink on the motor, and put a fan on it between runs to cool it down. Cutting a hole in the front windscreen can also help, as it gets airflow inside the shell.

It was my first meeting after 6 years off racing last week. i ran the car with a heatsink and cu a large hole in the screen, i think it could benefit from having an onboard fan in there?? are these available and allowed in GTi rules? i think when it gets hot its altering the performance of the car.

thanks

When the motors get hot, performance is reduced significantly. This problem gets worse as the motor gets older.

Perhaps your problems lie in the gearing; if you are over geared (pinion too big), then the motor will get hotter, and more quickly.

How many cells are you using, and what pinion are you using? Ithink a 12 pinion onto a 50 spur is as big as you want to go with a 6 cell car. 15 onto a 50 is the biggest I'd go on 4 cells.

Mark is right, you have to look at a few basic things when your motor runs hot, I would class hot as not being able to hold your finger on it for a couple of seconds after a 5 minute race.
Cutting out the front and rear windows in your bodyshell is a good step to allow some airflow through the car, this can then be optimised by having a heat sink on the motor. When you choose a heat sink go for one with nice big fins and choose a dark colour as matt black dissipates heat better than a shiny material.
You should also look at any form of resistance the car may have, check your wheels to make sure they spin freely, fit Mardave ball races to the back axle and check to see if you have too much toe in or out on the front wheels.
you will also need to check that the pinion and spur gear have the correct clearance to mesh properly and it is not to tight or to loose.
Fitting a fan to the car is not necessary as you will have to cut out the windows anyway to allow airflow into the fan to cool the motor. :)

thanks for the replys, i have cut hole in the front and rear screens and used a heatsink on the motor, fitted the ball race kit to the rear and made sure the fronts ran freely. I ran the car with the front wheels straight. also checked the meshing of the pinion and spur all the way around and it was spot on. so is it the norm for mardaves to run this hot??

Looks like you're running a 19T motor. I tried that once, and wore 2mm off my rear tyres in 1 run! Was quick while it lasted though! If that motor is getting hot, then you're almost definitely over geared.

I'll try and get some photos of my car.

You have cut holes in the body but I would try removing all of the window area as this would be a huge benefit obviously front and rear would give the best results.
One last opinion is the heat sink your are using is really too small I would go for as bigger heat sink as possible that allows much better dissipation of heat but also make sure the cut outs in the motor can are left open and clear.
During the recent hot weather I have been using a small PC fan ran from a power supply to fully cool my motor in between heats as obviously everything runs hotter when the ambient temperature is higher even the batteries get hotter during runs and charging.
Mardave's don't run hot at all, It depends on the motor as a high performance one will surely get hotter than a standard kit motor and possibly the amount of amps you pull from the batteries will be a factor and the demands of the track and the ammount of throttle you give it during a race.
Try a kit motor and run it for the length of a race at the same gearing you would normally use and see if it that gets as hot.

guys, now i am running the lexan sheels the over heating problem has almost cleared up, the weight of the shell must make a massive difference due to causing less work for the motor.

mark - 2mm in one race  you must be heavy on the throttle stick!!
