View Full Version : ALLOY UPPER SUSPENSION MOUNTS!!!

15-10-2003, 11:10 AM
hello people.

I have been running my mission with fusion upper suspention mounts, and the car was very good..

However, with my passion for all hop ups purple, i found out that schumacher make Purple Alloy versions of these..

I promptly ordered these and to my surprise they are different.

Moulded plastic ones have 2 positions for the upper wishbone, where as the alloy ones done(*positioned in between the holes of the plastic mount~) ...

obviously this will alter the handing of the car slighty but can anyone explain how

BUT THEY SURE LOOK SEXY!!!!!

Peter,
The higher the pin is the less roll will be generated along with less camber change. ie grip.
Most of the time I run in the lowest hole on the rear in the plastic mount and raise the front pin on high grip tracks to control roll on the way into corners and lower the pin on low grip tracks to generate turn in.

The alloy mount just gives you a mid way point.

Hope that helps

Hi I have been told that to run the fusion ally suspention mounts you need to buy purple hubs because the fusion ones are wider and give you stupid amounts of camber. I was going to buy them but it worked out at about £90 for it all, not the kind of loose change i have in my pocket...unfortinatly. Does any one know if it will work with out the ally hubs?

You can use the fusion mounts without the alloy hubs. We normally run in the inline holes on the hubs which means you will have to dremel a little material off the plastic hubs to stop them fouling the top wishbone as they get near the top of thier travel.

ok guys looking for some answers as im confused ( and before you all say it I KNOW Its not that long a journey.)

following jasons comments about the alloy mount i used them and to my discust the car handled like a back of SHITE!!!

same track same conditions (well a little colder) same set up except the following.

Alloy fusion bulkheads, previosuly shocks where 2 hole 50 weight , this time 3 hole 45 weight( to generate more roll thus more grip (so i was told)). and tthe infamous reeedy 19T duad mag, rather than peak dynasty.... cant explain it my self

please help

Could you explain what 'the bag of shite handling' actually means?

This might help us to dtermine the cause.

As DA_c_m says Peter its trick to diagnose the problem without knowing what it was ;)

I could speculate (might be fun!) -

- Speed = the Reedy quad-19 may need more work to hit the gearing sweet spot
- Excessive roll = 45 wt and 3 hole is soft for outdoors - mind you I've been running 30wt & 1 hole since the Ashby BTCC. Try standing shocks like that upright - say hole 4 or 5, which works really well at Aldershot.
- Front end understeer/oversteer = when fitting the alloy mount you did check camber and toe-in/out didn't you. If not one or both could be different both sides, in which case all sorts of weird things will happen.

I'm assuming we're ok with droop after Ashby Pete!

sorry guys was a bad day.....

my definition of "a bag of shite"

speed was fine, slower of the mark than some 12's but speed comparative. back end was/seemed very loose, car bit very hard into corner( even added more caster to try and get rid of it), but it unsettled the car and couldnt get a good rhythm with it..

car was fine the week before with the dynasty with an overall ration of 5.3 but this week the quad at 5.4 only managed a 15 max...ended up putting a 12x3 in the car and bending something..lol

speed probably had something to do with it, but then again probably my thumbs too...

droop as you say mark is no issue, (tell me those settings again plz), but think my new fancy Warpspeed chassis may have been - currently removed and stuffed ina box atm..... if you wanna have a look pm me and ill bring it next meeting somewhere.

the track i was racing was at www.maritimeracing.co.uk nice track well worth a visit if you havent yet.....

Hi Peter,

No time for a lenghty reply now - droop settings were +2 on the Hudy guage both front and rear.

Peter,

Did you change both mounts at the same time? And what holes were you running in on the plastic bulkheads before you changed them? Have you had the car working at that track before and how was it set up.
It sound like the font end of the car is rolling too much

was running front and rear bottom holes

In which case if you've changed nothing else... ;)...the alloy mounts should give you a little less front end. When I say changed nothing the sheer fact that the mounting position has changed will mess with the front camber, so you'll need to set both that and re-check toe-in/out while you're at it.

Then there is the famous "is anything bent" check - front lower suspension pins and the pivot balls are the most obvious. And a tyre coming unglued while I remember...

If its not these, then I suggest trying it again and let us know exactly what its doing (eg understeer off power, oversteer on power)

Cheers

Must admit my personal experiences with Fusion bulkheads have been as follows. Lower hole on plastic (all round) makes for a very sharp almost twitchy car. Usually very fast, but can be hard work. Tried some with a hole just above centre - not sure if is was 1 or 2mm. This made the car feel very strange. Didn't seem to be a massiev amount of grip. The jar seemed to float around and wouldn't "key into" the track at all. Didn't experement further, just gave up!! That said i do know of at least one team driver than ran the alloy (centre hole) quite a bit this year.
